Swap for a stadium
Considering John Prescott has given permission to develop the Falmer site, there is no reason why it cannot be used for the Onyx waste development instead of the football stadium.
Falmer would be a better site for the Onyx development for a number of reason:
1 It is not near an infant school.
2 It is not in an air pollution control area.
3 It is not on top of a groundwater protection zone.
4 It will not affect thousands of residents.
5 It will be near a major road rather than in the city centre, thereforeavoiding congesting city- centre streets.
6 It will still be near the railway to allow bulk movements of goods if necessary.
The reason why the football stadium will be better placed in Hollingdean are:
1 It will be right next to the railway-therefore allowing access exclusively via rail. With this in mind, the fans will only be able to get to it via rail, therefore stopping extra traffic and bringing extra money to the railways.
2 There is a real fear among the student poulation, especially ethnic minority groups, that if the fans are to use the Sussex University campus car parks, they will use the cheap campus bars and drunken violence may erupt.
3 The football stadiumwill not be in constant use, seven days a week and the cheers of football fans would be a lot more appealing to the local residents than the constant sound of reversing lorries, broken glass and seagull- not to mention the smell.
4 You can be proud of looking at your local football stadium, the same cannot be said when looking at theBrighton and Hove dump.
Why not let the people of Roundhill Conservation area, Five ways and Hollingdean decide-football stadium or the Brighton and Hove dump?
Do you think the Falmer anti Stadium brigade will see where he is coming from, probably not.
