i think the real story is how he left the squad threadbare in his last years. handful of players of note carrying a lot of players who weren't good enough for the top of the league.

I think you could argue Man U never had the best individual players under Fergie - but they invariably had the best team. Ronaldo was never really replaced but it didn't stop them winning the Premiership again after he had gone. Look at the money Liverpool and Spurs have spunked on the Bale and Suarez money and their subsequent league positions (I accept both are picking up now).

I think its pretty much a given that if Fergie was still in charge Man U would be challenging for the title with a team greater than the sum of its parts.
