Don't think I've seen such advance releases before - in fact it's relatively uncommon to see coins even from the current year...

Not sure I agree with these Royal Mint processes, the date on the coin should surely represent the date of minting, else it's a bit fat FRAUD.

It's an Olympics 2012 boxing gloves effort - guess they're out early to promote awareness.

(or is it a fake!?)

Or a mistake that could put its value up (for 11 days anyway)

Oh yeah! I have one too. Noticed it because of the boxing gloves so didn't spend it (weird I know). Hadn't noticed the date though.

Is it just me, or does it seem lighter in weight than usual?

The seaside.
Um, these have been widely around (in central Brighton, at least) for around a month now. My guess is they are putting money into circulation earlier than planned because of the recession (and trying to ease it), and maybe also presuming that some folks who get them will stow them away (eg as Xmas presents) ergo bolster the economy by taking that money out of circulation, ie into savings rather than fluid cash, howver briefly. Of the 20-30 of them that have come my way I've put them all instantly back into circulation as soon as I could. You don't fool me, you capitalist pigs x
