I have just been down to the Doctor's Surgery to make an appointment, only to find it closed. On the door is a note saying that the new opening times are Monday to Friday 9am 'till 6pm,outside of these hours ring N.H.S.Direct or go to Eastbourne Hospital.
What sort of service is that, not everyone has cars, and if you do they charge the earth for parking, and keep you waiting for hours.
Are things any better in Brighton.

Not really. Something that really winds me up is that I can't make an appointment in advance. They will only make "on the day" appointments. That means I have to not go to work, start ringing them at 0900, take about half an hour to get through and then there's no guarantee of an appointment. Why can't I simply ring up and ask for an appointment tomorrow? That way I don't have to take unnecessary time of work.

Go down to the surgery, be there when it opens and ask for an appointment for that day! Tell them your phone is not working otherwise you'd have called:) Remember to switch your mobile off though:lolol:

Get off your arse DD, get down to Southdown Road, 712 to the Arndale and then hop on the local bus to EGDH all for approx £3.20 return and 35 mins travel time. After EDGH go to the front and treat yourself to a fish supper from your friendly local Croatian run chippy for the princely sum of a fiver, all washed down with lashings of ginger beer (or a can of Tizer) and then back on the 712 to return to pikeysville (Seaford). Absolutely marvellous.

Thats fine.

The last time I had an appointment it was for 5.30pm and I was about five minutes late, and they had locked the doors. I waited outside until another patient came out and I grabbed the door and went in,the receptionist demanded to know how I had got in and called out for security. I felt like a burglar instead of a patient.

I think it's good that you can only make appointments on the day.

Let's say you wake up with an ear ache. It used to be two days to get an appointment so you make one just in case, and even if it clears up on its own you still go to "check it's OK"

Whereas if you know that if anything is serious you can see a doctor within a few hours of phoning you stop worrying. Often things clear up on their own.

It also stops all the worried old people making regular appointments just in case, because there's usually something to ask the doctor about. If they know they can get in quickly if they need to, they often don't bother.

But what if you start work at 4.30am?

When do you finish? Our surgery has morning appointments (phone at 8.30am onwards) and late afternoon appointments (phone after 1pm).

I assume you can't phone from work.
Usually about 6pm. By the time they open I might be 200 miles away and by the time they close I'm not back yet (if I get back at all).I need to know a couple of days in advance so I can arrange time off work. Why can't some doctors work days and some nights?

If it was a choice between an appointment with Dr Jones at Seaford Health Centre or walking to EDGH from Seaford on my hands on the off chance of getting seen I know which option I'd go for Doug!

Fiveways Surgery's just announced it's no longer opening on Saturday mornings. Which means for me repeat prescriptions for asthma stuff I can either take a half-day off work (ain't gonna happen, I don't go to work I don't get paid) or I can bung it in the post and hope for the best. C.mon NHS I appreciate there's pressures on ya bigtime, but that's just a slap in the face for anybody working nine to five. Not good. :nono:
