They can't really force you to turn up to work. Either phone in sick or just start your new job ( assuming you have one ) a week early. Your notice period in your contract isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Why tempting to tell them to stick it, it probably isn't a good idea to burn any bridges with them. You might need them again at a later date, especially if your new job doesn't work out. It's probably best to try and leave on good terms with your former employer.

Don't bother turning up, it's as simple as that. Unless you've already taken 16 days off sick this year then you've got every right not to go in. Best part is that you can make up any lame ass excuse you want when they ask you why you're not there. I once told my manager in an old job I wouldn't be returning to work due to the death of my goldfish (fictitiously named after him I might add). I got a full two weeks pay no questions asked.

I used to work for a leading firm in a very traditional industry. The management decided that it was time to drag the company (founded 1751) into the twentieth-century, so they invited some consultants in to decide what needed to be done. The first thing they suggested was a "modern" Human Resources Department to replace the old Personnel Department, so it was duly set up on the model they designed. Within a year, staff turnover had trebled, and training and recruitment costs had gone up 5x. Then the stupid HR manager decided to have someone sacked for "offering insufficient support to the new management structures". That person sued, and won - and was awarded a huge payout and full costs. The company, faced with the costs of that case and already struggling under the enormous burden of the new HR dept's 'ideas', were forced to sell their historic headquarters (their main asset), struggled on for a year or two more, but were then taken over by a faceless multinational which asset-stripped it. Loads were laid off, and the oldest company in the English-speaking world in that industry disappeared.

Needless to say, the person who caused all of this - the HR manager - walked into another job elsewhere, ready to wreak further havoc.

Luckily I had already walked out - citing the stupidity of the new management as the reason in my resignation letter.

It's usually the people doing the HR job being morons rather than the idea of an HR department at all. I once enquired as to what the notice period was at my company as I was deciding between 2 jobs that I had at the same time. When I came into work the following week my manager said "Oh I thought you'd left. HR said you'd handed your notice in" despite the fact that I had to give 1 weeks notice in writing.
