diddycoy

Originally a Romani term of respect (dadika) for an older person, this has come to mean (in UK English) a Gypsy or traveller who is not of pure blood. The insult is therefore compounded, not only does this person have the negative qualities that prejudice has associated with travellers, but they are also of suspect descent, doubly damned.
they're not even proper gyppos, they're f***ing diddikois

Thank you. I shall now admonish by father for being so terribly politically incorrect

To some it's very offensive.
To others it's a frequently used phrase that they don't think twice about using... a bit like the older generation's use of the word w*g... and that's not wag, weg, wig, wug or wyg before you jokers start! :jester:

I tend to say 'travellers' - but that can also be wrong!

you mean "West Indian origin gentlemen" - which is the true meaning and isnt deemed offensive but as soon as its shortened it becomes a racist term as with the word Pakistani :afro:

That's not even close to the true meaning. It's a shortening of golliwog, and like any term meant as abuse is offensive. Odd how these threads always seem to be taken as an excuse for the retarded to trot out all there favourite racist words.

As for steward 433, it doesn't matter what your ethnicity is, you can still be racist. Some of the most racist people I've ever worked with have been Indian, and anyone who's ever spent any time in the Middle East can confirm just how racist the arabs are.

Didn't it ORIGINALLY stand for Worthy Oriental Gentleman?

I have heard two versions of the origin of the term Pikeys.

The first relates to, 14th century & up to the English Civil War, Military Pikemen who were, in times of war, allied with the highest bidder as mercenaries, but in times of peace were a general nuisance going round doing peoples drives and that.

Alternatively and probably more likely the term relates to the old English "Turnpike" i.e road junction, "Turnpikeys" being travellers or other itinerants

neither option being particularly flattering.

I kid thee not, I was in my local supermarket this very lunchtime, and I caught sight of this direct-to-video classic as I was passing the DVD racks. I confess I did have to stop and do a double-take because I thought my eyes were deceiving me...
