He is worth £400k plus but if we are shoving him out the door we may struggle to get it. Personnaly if we can't get at least £300k I wouldn't sell. We have more chance of reaching the play offs with him than without him.

Even if he stayed and we did get promotion, i reckon he'd still go in the Summer after holding the club to ransom then taking the highest offer.

Afraid I am not well versed in the intricaies of the Transfer game, but why would a club BUY a player now, when they could wait till season end and get him for free?

Well you certainly wouldn't pay over the odds now, but you would buy a player because:

a) it GUARANTEES you get him, rather than compete with others in the summer
b) he may help you in a promotion/relegation battle that you are currently involved in

But 6 months before his contract expires, a player can talk to other clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement, effectivly guarenteeing he signs when out of contract with us.

Hammond doesn't have to rush into a decision, he may decide to wait til the end of the season before making a final decision as whether to sign or leave, he may even think that if the club is going to be fighting it out the following season for promotion, even if we don't go up this season, he may still stay.

The only real reasons i can see to buy someone a few months before his contract expires is if the manger thinks that the player in question would:
add something different to their squad / help in the battle for promotion or against relegation / if they are looking to boost numbers or replace players sold on / got enough money not to have to worry about paying small transfer fees / or simply to try to unsettle his original team for the new teams benefit (Cantona was signed from Leeds by Man U, not because they really wanted him, but to stop Leeds from having him.

eg. If Man Us Ronaldo was to be available on a free at the end of the season, a team might look to buy him before his contract expires rather than wait because of what he can offer, rather than trying to save a few quid

Dean can't talk to other English clubs until the last 6 weeks of his contract; it's a clause in the Football League/Premiership rules. But he could happily agree a contract with a non-English club (Motherwell?) from now.

If he is to go in the window, we would have to take what we can get, and hope Dean accepts the move. We are in no position to really dictate a price (if we truly want to sell), Dean is the one with all the power.

Trust me your better versed than most on here ....................

Coz thats the exact point ....... and why would a player leave now when he could negotiate better personal terms on the back of each holding back until then !!
