Let's face it, many guage 'ardness by the capability of some pratt to unthinkingly and uncaringly do damage to another person, usually by sucker-punching or mobbed up. These permutations are not particularly brave and do not connote strength.
Shaking off your own life's troubles and putting yourself out to help others is harder.
Placing yourself in defence of someone weaker or in need is tough.
Working like a slave and getting up in the dark to do it every day, all day, so you can feed a family and perhaps with little thanks is monstrously difficult.
Staying awake after an intricate and dangerous surgery in order to perform on an emergency patient, while bringing all your faculties to the fore to succeed is dedicated.
Fortitude with dedication to a mental and physically draining task is often well 'ard.
Swinging yer clumped mitts at someone else's visage is usually a futile and less-than worthwhile passtime.
This puts it into some better perspective from mho.
