[Misc] How competent are you at DIY?

I can paint and wallpaper and that's it.

As I come from a large family of various trades, mechanics, engineers and DIY experts, my complete failure is an oft referenced family joke. I rely mainly on a small group of NSCers who are professionals if anything needs doing

I have always been very grateful for a decent range of practical skills - but also for the ability to generally work out what to do, or what needs doing in most instances; so even if i can't actually do it myself, I have a pretty good handle on whether it's being done okay by whomever I'm paying.

But plumbing I avoid. I always end up smashing my knuckles and swearing, and then it still drips. Although I did recently take a bit of ceiling board out to wrap some sort of rubber band type thing followed by plaster cast around a leaking pipe joint - on the advice of my plumber who didn't want to use his blowtorch so near to the floorboards above!

I can do the most jobs around the house. It has certainly kept me busy in my retirement.

My main problem is that I am just too slow.

I am basically useless and most jobs I do end up not much better than a bodge job.

Jealous of those that can do just about everything.

I will have missed options, let me know what they are and I will endeavour to add them.

Moderate imo but only if it’s a simple “5 minute “ job.

Modestly … good gardener, also pretty good at hard landscaping, brickwork, decorating, fencing, plasterboarding etc. Dec’s would’ve improved simply through experience … always a project set my Mrs W.

Would never touch plastering. An underrated skill.

I’ve put up a shed once, from brambles and uneven ground to a shed there. Not going near electricals, plumbing or brickwork (except carefully drilling). Would rather not do any DIY but sometimes I have to.

I can do most things. I won't touch gas plumbing though, f**k that up and your house goes bang.
I converted our double garage into a workshop and a pub.

@PILTDOWN MAN would be the most skilled at all the above I would imagine. Former aircraft engineer and a wealth of experience in work on his businesses/homes.

Pretty useless. Haven’t even attempted to do any diy since 1982, and that was a bit of wallpaper stripping until I got fed up and paid somebody.
Can tidy up the garden, but with my reduced mobility and the passing years, that is becoming harder.
Luckily, I have a good list of reliable bods who can do whatever needs doing and know that it will be done properly.

Try my hand at most things, fitting double glazing, plumbing, electricals, kitchen fitting, bathrooms, flooring, decorating, gardening, garage roofing, brick laying, block paving etc. etc. had to learn as never been able to afford paying pro’s and the last gaffe Mrs G insisted we buy has taken nine years to get half decent, now going through the whole updating process again. Keeps me off the streets and out of the pub
