Holloway wants more respect for Millwall fans

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
He seems like a genial chap and presumably has a moral compass in tact, but he's blaming the wrong people here. He should be blaming the many hundreds of Millwall fans whom coerced the authorities in to believing they had no other option.

Perhaps he is worried for his job.

The problem is, Millwall really are different - they really are the only truly inner-city club in the country.

A few thoughts:-

1. Not any more. They are less "inner city" than Arsenal who still have a large local support. Most Millwall fans are down in Beckenham, Bromley, Kent and beyond.
2. But they do have "Inner City" fans but inner city is the reverse of what your geography teacher told you. To own or even rent a property within zone 2 in London (which Millwall both as a place and down on the south side of the river where they play) means you have a good job. Inner city is the reverse of what it meant in 1980. You dont stay within zone 2 these days without a half decent job. If you don't follow that then just google property prices in Bermondsey, Peckham, Wapping or Canary Wharf (Millwall's areas) and compare those to say Worthing, Portslade or Newhaven.
3. Millwall have a large fan base (Millwall's is not as big as Albion's , but it could be), but like Brighton, they have always been garbage. This affects their support. If they had a decent side for 10 years in the top flight then it would be different, as it would be the Albion.
4. They made headlines with Luton because of a comedy show and the BBC. They can be a nightmare but so can Brighton and Pompey, but if Millwall cause trouble then it is all over the press because it makes a story. That I think is what Holloway and Millwall fans are getting at.
5. They have a reputation for racism but have more non English fans than most clubs because of where they are - London.

Only Point 3 above is actually fact - In fact point 5 is totally wide of the mark because although they are in a catchment area which should dictate that the have a large afro Caribbean following, they in fact do not. Neither do they have a large Asian following. Their fans are largely English and Anglo Scots. That is due to the fact that they were formed by Scottish Dockyard Workers.

Their fans are actually no worse than some other fans and I know that the club work hard to rid itself of their reputation. Sadly what lets them down is the fact that when they do well in a cup competition it then brings out all the thugs from years gone by and inevitably when that cup run comes to an end then those thugs are around to ensure that their bad boy image is maintained and the Press are only to happy to assist them maintain it.

So no matter how hard the club try they will never lose that reputation. When they were in the FA Cup Semi Final against Wigan a few years ago their fans were seen fighting amongst themselves and the press reported it as such for 2 days non stop in the papers and on TV.

It later came to light that they were actually fighting a group of Bulgarian fans who actually travel round Europe to clubs which have a reputation such as Millwall , Chelsea, Wisla Cracow, Den Haag solely for the purpose of fighting. The press never reported if because it wasn't as good a story as Millwall fans fighting amongst themselves.

Millwall as a club want to lose the reputation. Some of the fans don't want to lose the reputation. The UK press will ensure that they never do.

As for Ian Holloway...................He talks a lot of shit and should keep his mouth shut on certain things which are not his jurisdiction. Chris Hughton once said he didn't like the Birmingham third kit when he was manager there.

Holloway in a full page article slated Chris for making such a comment, even although the colour or design of the Birmingham City kit had absolutely nothing to do with him.

Holloway is a waste of space who just likes to hear his own voice and has no concern for anyone else other than himself. He should have a ''mute'' button inserted at the back of his head so that sensible people could switch him off at will

Neither here nor there
Fact, steward was punched on the top of the final slope down to the railway entrance and he ran down the disabled supporters side and ran off, a couple of our fans came down after him but he was gone.

Absolutely true. Didn't see the bloke throw the punch but saw the steward immediately after she was hit, and the Brighton fans running after the Millwall thug.
