Along with many on this forum, I watched the tragedy unfold live at Heysel, likewise the terrible events at Hillsborough.

Although intrinsically linked, Heysel seems to have been forgotten on these shores in relation to Hillsborough.

Why do you think that is?

I’m not sure 🤷 Do you have an opinion on why that is? Don’t be shy

I remember watching it on TV live and unfortunately it felt like the English disease had struck again. I didn‘t know until the next day the true casualties involved, but I think I remember seeing one fan involved with the fighting pointing what looked like a gun at another group of supporters, or am I imagining that?

I was at university at the time. The guys in the flat above me, including a proper scouser, all went to the game and I only didn’t because I had an exam that week.
I heard lots of stories about that day but the main emotion was sadness in that they were swapping shirts, scarves, flags before the game that they brought back and then it turned into a scene from hell.

I don't think it's been forgotten at all. I mean, as soon as you mentioned it I knew it must have been 40 years. I think I was playing cricket that night and I got back to my friends house to be told what had happened. I saw the last part of the match. The players didn't want to be there.

Normally for something to stay in discussion there would need to be a lingering series of questions surrounding it, like Hilsborough. But there isn't with Heysel. Fans were killed by thuggery and criminal mayhem in a ground that was not suited to the occasion.

Feelings of guilt and shame - not individually, but collectively as English football fans.

I think we don't want to linger on it or discuss it too much because of this.

Whereas with Hillsborough the subsequent story has all been about shifting the blame and cover-ups and so on - and, as fans we collectively feel rage against those who have done this.

As many on Merseyside say, ‘Scouse, not English’, unless you blame Chelsea of course.

Topic came up in the pub tonight and we couldn’t come up with an answer. I know the late great Brian Clough had an opinion but wondered what the wider public thought.
What was Brian Cloughs opinion?

It was when Juve fans were fighting with the police. One of them aimed a starting pistol at them.

I'm not sure there can be any criticism of modern day LIverpool FC. 40th Anniversary today and they've just unveiled a new plaque.
The club no. I do detest all their ‘Scouse not English’ and booing of the national anthem, pulling down Union Jacks bollocks amongst an increasing number of their fans though. It’s a relatively recent thing too. The Liverpool fans I know are nothing like that but then none of them are from Liverpool.

He blamed the fans. But to be fair, most people had been sold by the narrative of the media and the police.

Having family from Liverpool (and writing this FROM Liverpool) I can assure you are talking utter shit if you were in any doubt.

Lovely people up here.

Oh, I thought they had booed the national anthem, eg at the Carabao Cup final? My mistake.

That’s just factual. The Liverpool fans I know are not from the city and find that attitude towards things like the national anthem awkward and embarrassing. My old boss is a regular at Anfield and a keen Royalist. He was at the parade on Monday. He just keeps quiet on such things, sings the national anthem with gusto when watching Engalnd but not when watching Liverpool. In 1977 for the Silver Jubilee Liverpool fans had banners about the Queen. Would they do that now?

Heysel was a disgrace and whilst there were some mitigating factors that amplified the tragedy it would not have happened without the attacks by Liverpool fans. Juve fans no saints that night either but their protagonists were at the other end. The stadium was also a shambles. For me the lowest point for football in the modern age. It also seems distasteful that Juve are referenced in the Chiesa song given the history between the two clubs.
