As I said on another thread about player signings I do not think this will happen BUT in 1968 we signed a centre forward (striker for the young uns) from Spurs, Bobby Smith, who played for England at Wembley 6 months earlier so anything is possible.

The difference now being that players earn so much in their life in the Prem that they dont drop down the leagues like they used to having already made their money.

1964.

BG has mixed up his Bobby Smiths. We did sign Bobby Smith in 1968 but it was the Grimsby midfielder not the ex-England striker who, as Greyrun pointed out, we signed in 1964. I bet the difference in wages between Div 1 and Div 3 was about a fiver a week though.

If Heskey signs for us this summer, I'll run naked round the Amex whistling Donkey Serenade

just asking a question, doesnt really need childish comments.

It's not even about you, people are not necessarily ridiculing your question in particular - but if you look at NSC over the last 10 days you will notice a SHITLOAD of rumours and THAT'S why people roll their eyes.

Anyway, if you are sensitive to that much, you might not be in the mindset for North Stand Chat and could head for Brightonfans with Yorkie and London Irish etc.

Yes, good old Bobby Smith eh - the one for whom everyone now says "and Smith must score" in that Wembley Final when Foster in his headband went jinking around the United midfield to pop the ball on a plate for Sir Bobby.

I put 1965 but thought that was wrong so typed his name in Wikipedia and the wrong one came up and I didnt notice sorry, it was 1964 that we signed him. He reputedly cost £5k a lot less than Gordon Smith of 'Smith must score' who cost £440k.
