... Brazil did not capitulate on their own....give the Germans some credit.

i'm not taking anything away from the Germans, but the Brazilians did capitulate on their own. other teams have put up far stronger resistance to the Germans: Ghana gave them a wake up, US tried to play them at their own game, Algeria kept them out for normal time (didn't see the France game, seems it was tight though). at no point did Brazil attempt to steady the ship, take stock and rebuild, save a period in second half when the new players seem to put some pressure on the German area. once they'd broken out of that though it was back to domination, with a flacid Brazil just looking to get off the pitch and go home.

This is similar to Mellotron's unlucky, unlucky, unlucky England post from the other day. The one point you seem to be missing is that Germany were never beaten in any of these games or really worried to be honest. The one game you did not see was France which was a good lesson in efficient football and getting through with minimum of fuss; get the goal then close down and see out the game....save your energy and booking and injuries for later.

It's worth noting that HT did say at the outset of the tournament that Germany were going all the way. With just one game to go, they've upped their game when they really needed to (and, strangely, this was only in the opening match and the semi-finals), and -- as HT alludes to in post 182 -- been efficient and done what they need to do in the other games.
Last night's game was gob-smackingly extraordinary, even more so than Spain being dethroned by Holland but as brilliant as Germany were, Brazil haven't been up to much all tournament. That said, it was Germany that demonstrated this. Brazil's woodwork was hit in the final minute against Chile -- who I thought were the better side in that game -- yet they managed to scrape through on penalties. Against Colombia, they had their best game of the tournament, but won by at least matching and probably surpassing Colombia in the kicking-lumps-out-of-the-opposition stakes, assisted by a laissez-faire referee (who was emblematic of the refereeing in the tournament).
