Henman is also ( mostly ) useless on any surface other than grass.

As a purely Grass Court tournamant, a good Wimbledon performance is not sufficient, of itself, to establish a tennis players ability. They should also be good on Clay, Hardcourt & Synthetic / Indoor surfaces.

Henman is no Borg, Connors, McEnroe or Lendl.

Thats bollocks henman has never won a grass court tourney

he won the masters last year on hard, he has 12 titles to his name plus been runner up in a number.
your not world number 5 if you can only play on one surface esp if its grass as its only used for 4 weeks of the season.

Not being a fan of tennis, hasnt he won other tournaments, bearing in mind that Wimbledon is just one "Open" or "Tournament" of which he competes. I am saure he has won a few other competitions but the UK only takes notice when "Wimbledon!" starts!

:nono: It'll be his year next year!":nono:
:shootself

He hasn't won a Grand Slam tournament although he has won more minor comps.

You don't get to number 6 in the world by doing reasonably well at Wimbledon every year. He got to the semis of the French (clay) this season and performs consistently well all year round.

You people makes yourself look like right TWATS thinking that he only works 2 weeks a year and picks up an OBE for it.

His preferred surface is NOT grass, it is the hard courts where he plays best due to his serve and volley game.

It strikes me that a lot of people who are slating don't know jack shit about tennis or are just rubbish at it.

You're absolutely right, can't stand the game myself !!!!!!!!!

Still don't think he's done good enough for an OBE.

My point is specifically that OBE's should be reserved for EXCEPTIONAL levels of achievement, not merely winning some tournaments ( where the competition may or may not have been world class ), admirable though that may be.

Henmans good, but he isn't amongst the Greats. That means he'll have to go the extra mile to earn his OBE in my book.

Beckham is an OBE and no doubt he deserves it more than Henman because he plays a working class game :nono:

OBE's should not be given out because of sporting success, they should be given out for the work they do for the country, not personal achievement.

Just go down the park during Wimbledon and see how many kids are playing tennis instead of being inside. I think there would be a lot more there than usual, Henman has a graet deal to do with this albeit a tad indirectly. For this I believe it is right that he has been awarded the OBE.

there are always more kids down the park during wimbledon,
i remember when i was at school during wimbledon it was the same, we had no british player of any worth in the late 80,s!

O.B.E,s should be awarded to people who change the world in some good way. not just for playing a game you love and getting shit loads of cash for.
if as you say it has encouraged kids to take up sport then all well and good but henman didnt set out with that in mind.
you will get more kids playing football in parks pretending to be beckham ,rooney etc than you ever will henman.

going back to your point about upper classes playing rugby/cricket, its only because they play it more in public schools that state , it has nothing to do with money really.

Obe's do get awarded to people for lots of things. A lollipop lady in Leeds for example, another one who was a dinner lady got one.

They aren't a limited edition you know and sport does enhance peoples's lives.

When was the last time you went to a comprehensive school and saw some cricket nets? I drive round Brighton all the time looking for some that haven't been damaged by little scally pricks. Most schools do not have the money to provide the equiptment for kids to play cricket or rugby. As much of a shame that this is unfortnately there is little that can be done about it.
Public schools are the only ones who can afford the equiptment meaning only the priveliged will have a good opportunity to become successful at those sports.

Cricket isn't very high up the list in Sussex it's true, but up North and in the West Country it's taken a LOT more seriously. In Somerset almost every little village has it's own team with superb facilities

Rugby however is almost as inclusive as football. My son's friend plays for a junior Lewes team and we go to several functions at Brighton Rugby club. Go up there on a Tujseday evening in winter and it's choc-a-bloc with kids of all ages playing rugby.

Golf does rely a bit more on wealth to get decent players started (though not as much as tennis) - hence it's another sport I don't care about.

we have had this discusion b4, he is an upper class twat who wouldnt be where he is today without the funding of his rich parents. unfortuntely playing Tennis is an elitest sport in britain.
i cannot support someone who has had a major advantage to others in Tennis.

ffs thake that chip off your shoulder.

his dad's a solicitor - hardly the Duke of Westminster.

so you would support the Williams sisters and Sharapova who had support from their POOR parents, but you won't support Henman because he had support from (your description) RICH parents

Rugby has f*** all profile in Sussex. (thankfully)
