It is all part of negotiating. We make an offer and it is turned down, we make another offer.
All part and parcel of it.

We do have to pay for him because he is under 23.

Isn't that only if he's out of contract and we make an approach? Surely it doesn't apply if Villa are prepared to let him go for nothing?

I'm sure I remember hearing the phrase "nominal fee".

Harding was out of contract.
Don't forget Henderson has also played at under 21 level.

Nobody gets much change out of Doug Ellis though.

We could be bidding for a one legged 37 year old Ukrainian and he'd still want half a million for him.

Clubs are entitled to ask for a fee for out of contract under 24 year olds.

But they don't have to.

Yes, which makes him different from Henderson doesn't it?

Thats my point, surely Villa are quite entitled to transfer his registration to us for as much or little money as they desire, including nothing?

Sky Sports news ticker stated it was a "permanent loan deal" that was rejected, my guess is we wanted him on loan until his contract expires then we sign him permanently.

Aha, an interesting slant on the matter.
