google search for adaware and download it (not that big) helps get rid of spyware crap and should solve the pop-up issue
http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/

Google toolbar is worth getting but you still need to get rid of the spyware on your system, link above has the download sites (right menu) for it...just get the free version.

and STOP going to gay porn sites and you wont get them in the first place

Google taskbar is good, but you may still have problems Trig.

I have a hijacker that I can't get rid of (may be auto.search.msn I think) which manifests itself as a blue search bar, and it keeps renaming itself as the google task bar.

I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot, and these also help, but I can't get rid of all pop-ups. Search for Ad-Aware and Spybot on google to find out where to download these programs.

Some of them seem to get around the google pop-up blocker, perhaps be storign the actual pop-ups on my hard drive..

I'm sure that there must be a way of getting rid of some of the more stubbon hijackers, but I've yet to find it.

I take you have got the latest files from adaware (check for updates link - when you run it). If its the same toolbar as one I came across I went to the homepage for it and there was an uninstall program that you download and it did get rid of it! which was surprising, try that and they run all your spyware programs again.

I'll try that when I get home Crabtree - thanks.

I know I got the same spyware from the microsoft updates link. Reunning Ad-Aware 6 with updates and Norton, over a dozen times seems to have cured the problem, with deleting two hot fix programmes.

The hot fixes come up with porn sites, which appeared to stop everything on the computer.

whilst i'm here, the simplest and most effective virus scanner.killer is a program called Stinger. Do a google search and the first link takes you do the download site (only 650k I think). Its alot quicker than most anti-virus programs and useful for quick scans if you have any problems. I found 2 new viruses on my system when Norton did'nt find them in a scan before it!

Don't use Internet Explorer and your problems will be solved. I alternate between Opera and Mozilla and have no worries.

be careful with Stinger!

It also puts in the registry a couple of items that allow it to run...some hyjackers lock on to these and use the links.

Run SPYBLASTER...that is pretty good

my mates PC has an interesting startup error:

NTLDR is missing
ctrl+alt+delete to reboot

6 possible solutions with one of them being a pain in the arse. Tried 4 without progress, number 5 is to change the IDE cable, if that dont work then its no 6 "the pain in the arse" which is a complete reinstall of WinXP....grrrrr

Sounds like you might have a key value in your registry that the market score hijacker is using to re-install itself everytime you boot up after a deletion.

I basically went thru my registry and noted down all the key values in the start up section and then went to this site. http://www.answersthatwork.com/. It'll tell what each one is and how to remove it if its something that shouldn't be there. If it doesn't have a fix/removal instruction then do a search on google and you'll find an answer somewhere.

Hope that helps.

thanks but unfortunatley not, its not an upgrade so that blows that link out the water. Its either the IDE cable is screwed which I dont think it is as I can see the HD in the BIOS (will swap it over later anyway just to check) or a re-install. Already tried copying the files from the WinXP install disk but to no avail.
