help - what's in my new wooden bench???

We bought a new oak storage cabinet/bench/seat the othr week and occasionally (especialy in the evening) we can hard a noise coming from it as if a small creature is in the wood and eating it way out. It' to noisy to be woodworm (and there are no small holes in the wood) - what can it be

On my days off from Fire Service I work on local farm. Today I was pumping water out of a 30 ft deep pit in a grain silo, ready for this years' grain harvest. When I climbed down the pit with the pump I thought I could hear some scurrying... when I finally got to the bottom I switched on my torch and the pit was alive with the fattest rats you have ever seen...
