the laptop i'm on now is one that I bought for my wife for christmas - as such the free antivirus is about to expire. Rather than buy the fullversion of the pre-installed McAfee (which i believe is shite) i was going to download AVG free. However i'm a bit nervous (not being techy). Can anyone help with the following...

1)Do i need to uninstall McAfee first?
2) is it safe to go onto the web with nothing to find the AVG free download page?
3) is there anything else that i should be aware of?

Thanks.

Rob.

Had AVG Free for ages now and seems fine & it should be ok to just search for it on Google and follow the steps to install.

I've been using AGV free for about 6 years on all my household kit [5 laptops and 2 desktops] and can recommend it.
Yes, I believe there can be problems with two AVs running. So ....
What I do is go to AVG Anti-Virus 2012 | AVG UK and "save" rather than "run" the install file [save to eg your desktop]
Then uninstall existing AV
Then execute [double-click] the AGV install file that you saved to your desktop.
Yes, this will go out to the Internet to bring down latest AGV AV libraries etc. but this should be safe since it will only be going to secure AGV site / folders as directed in the Install code.

Hope this helps ....

McAfee is rubbish, the free version of Avast is supposed to be better than fre AVG and the Microsoft offering is good too.

Both AVG and Avast are good.
As others have said: Download your new AV and save. Then delete your present AV. Then finally install your new AV.
Good luck.
