Stretching it a little bit, from 1948 one player even had an Iron Cross.
Apart from the two already mentioned this one probably made the biggest impression on me in the 50's.
Go on Mr Hine you can get this.

By the seaside in West Somerset
Bert Trautmann and Ferenc Puskas - both probably more associated with the 50's but they were already top flight in the late 40's

Was there a reason he did not fight in WWII?

Nat Lofthouse was a 'Bevin Boy', one of thousands of young men conscripted to work in Britain's mines by Ernest Bevin, the coalition government's Minister of Labour and National Service during World War II.

He was only 14 when war broke out

Yes, but he was twenty when it finished. I wondered if there was a specific reason why he was not sent to the front when he reached the age of conscription and Everest has explained it.

He was only 14 at the start of the war anyway. He signed for Bolton the day after the war started.

Sadly, I am in need of subtitles, but thanks all the same.
