Bingo! Just looked up what Gillingham's shirts looked like for that season and they did have that zigzag thing on the front of their home shirts, so I assume the away kit was the same.

Is it not Wilkins who plays the initial ball from the left-back position?

Yes-100% -pre 1988-89 as the North East corner(In the video,has away fans in) was closed on safety grounds in the summer of 1988 reducing the capacity to 23,000.

1987-88 my 1st season,although my first match was January 1988 so perhaps this game was just before i started going-

Good find. Definitely The Gills. Destinctive kit at the time.
Wasn't their keeper sent off and a outfield player went in goal, who then became a hero for beating us in the penalty shoot out?
