Victory at doomed Wigan would have done it but a 2-1 defeat against a side that had not won at home since August means they are still sweating.
Albion are six points above Millwall, who have a game in hand at Blackburn tomorrow night.
“The next game’s going to be very, very tough. What I didn’t want to be doing is desperately hoping the results go in our favour because we haven’t been able to alleviate that pressure ourselves.
“The two games don’t come much harder than Watford and Middlesbrough but that’s what it is and that’s the challenge.”
Millwall finish at home to Derby and away to Wolves, both trying to clinch play-off spots.
Rotherham, two points below Albion with a game in hand, are still waiting to find out if they will be docked three points for fielding an ineligible player against Hughton’s toilers.
