Have you ever seen a goal by Norman Gall?

The Fourth Division Championship in 1965. And it was his header in the dying minutes of the home match with Tranmere that season that sent Albion to the top of the table for the first time.

:goal:

It took him another two seasons before he scored his next goal, netting the first against Bristol Rovers in November 1966, as Albion came back from a two-goal deficit to score three times in the last 15 minutes. Some fans may also remember his fourth and last goal for the Albion - a 25-yard header against Torquay at Plainmoor in 1970.

Wrong end of Smash 'n Grab 2-8

Yes I do remember the 2-8 Bristol Rovers defeat. Smash & Grab were Bannister & Warboys werent they ?

I think the 0-4 defeat at the hands of the mighty Leatherhead was around the same time.

They were, under the stewardship of Brian Clough (when he bothered to turn up) and Peter Taylor the 1st.

Tragically I saw both, and yet people complain about now. Both games had bigger crowds than Withdean could hold. The Walton and Hersham game was held on a midweek afternoon as the power strike meant that floodlights couldn't be used. Think it was the only one ever at The Goldstone.

I saw his goal against Bristol Rovers in 1966.

His best goalscoring seasons seemed to be 1965 and 1966. 1967 to 1969 were lean spells. There used to be a big cheer when he crossed the half-way line.

I was definitely there, a real grudge game as, totally from memory, Trannies were top of the league and went 1-0 up, but lost to us 2-1.

As for Sir Norman, don't remember who scored. Met him at a party several years later when we'd just got relegated from the 2nd Div and at his instigation all he went on about was how the supporters were fantastic and deserved better. He was right and we did before the decade was out. Solid, genuine Gateshead boy in my book, who some of the younger ones should know was virtually an automatic choice for many seasons, even after the arrival of big money signing (£25,000) Big John Napier.

Was I there. not half. Albion 2 Tranmere 1 1965. Norman headed the winner in the last minute. I think there were nearly 25000 of us there. Tranmere were top. We eventually replaced them. The great Bobby Smith scored the first. What days they were.

Ah yes, happy days. I can remember Sir Norman's goal against Tranmere, a vital win to help us clinch the championship.

I was at the Bristol Rovers game, but can't remember his goal - a classic comeback though after being 2-0 down.

And I was there at Torquay - how could anyone score with a header from the edge of the box? This was another memorable game cos a) it was freezing cold and b) there was a pitch invasion by one of our supporters protesting, I think, about a refereeing decision. He was chucked out.

Can't remember if I was at the Shrewsbury game for Sir Norm's other goal, but I probably was. It was at the time when Alex Dawson was scoring for fun.

But did you ever see a goal by Steve Burtenshaw?

Norman Gall was one goal every 122 games, but Steve Burtenshaw, a local lad, only played 252 games, and had a better record proportionally, scoring once every 84 games.

In response to the original question; yes I saw the goal v Shrewsbury in 1969. Norman Gall was an astonishingly consistent player. He could arguably have been judged as player of the season each year from the mid 60s to early 70s.

Good that he's enjoying retirement and still cares about the Albion.
