Good article by Simon Jenkins in the Guardian about how inappropriate and militaristic is all this remembrance stuff. As he says we should be remembering why it happened, how it could have been stopped, how politics failed the people and what lessons there are for today in dealing with Russia, Syria, Iraq, Gaza etc. For example my view (not his) is that the much hated EU is part of the reason why such a war will not start again in Western Europe and yet many people are intent on breaking it up again into competing nation states. Do we never learn anything?

Who is he to say that people remembering those who gave their lives in service of this country, whether or not they may personally have agreed with the reasons for it all, is inappropriate?

Virtually every family and every community lost someone, it would surely be far more inappropriate to forget them?

Great gesture by Pompey, btw.
