since we won the League 1 Championship?

I have been impressed by the play of the 3 teams I've seen this season. Southend, MK Dons and Gillingham and it seems to me to be quite a bit better these days.

League one (especially this season) is the funniest comedy to hit these shores since the Inbetweeners , Gillingham last night were awful , a shambles and a complete joke - and normally thats OUR role!!!

There are going to be cloggers and poor teams in every division, but I think overall the standard of football in this league IS better than a few years ago. Far from a "shambles", Gillingham actually played some very decent stuff at times and had some good spells of possession, as did MK Dongs the other week and Southend. We've not seen Leeds, Norwich or Charlton yet either. In actual fact, the last three home games have been very entertaining I think (even though we didn't get the result in two of them).

Agree with this. :drink:

Spot on Easy. The people around me were commenting in the first half what an entertaining game it was and for the middle third, the Gills played some delightful football.

For a change we got the result we deserved and it's good to see that US has his usual blinkered view which again demonstrates he hasn't a clue about football.

I guess from his point of view, it depends what he is comparing it to. If he is comparing it with Premier League football, then it will be poor in comparison. But as the standard of the top leagues get higher, this will in turn increase the skill of the lower leagues.

Of course, at League One, you will not get players of a Wayne Rooney Calibre. You get players who may be very good at scoring but have little pace. The difference between the top players is that their all round game is excellent and as you move down the leagues you get defficiencies in different individual areas.

From my point of view, the top level is increasingly improving using new technologies, making players fitter and bringing in the best players from across the world- making better players available for the lower leagues, so yes the quality is increasing- and I actually enjoy most League One matches.

I wouldn't actually want Brighton to become a Premier League club. Just sit happily in the Championship and attempt cup runs

Surely just by having teams such as Norwich, Southampton and Charlton in the league the standard has been raised by default?

Not at all. They are in League 1 because they weren't good enough for the Championship.

I think it's an effect of foreigners in football. The English players who have lost their places in Arsenal's team have to look for 1st team football elsewhere, so drop to the championship, championship player swho lost their place to the arsenal cast offs are now in league one, etc.

Yes, the quality of the division is higher than it was. Doesn't necessarily mean it's great, just that it has improved.

The quality is a little higher this year. We have mostly played relatively poor sides so far, certainly none of the big guns except MK Dons who looked worse than last year, so it is difficult to get a fair assessment from what I have seen. However Leeds are undoubtably a better side this season, Charlton, Norwich and Southampton are better than Leicester, Peterborough and Scunthorpe. Huddersfield are better than last season. Millwall and Tranmere (ok having Barnes as manager was a major hindrance) who were right up there last season are not doing so well this year with similar squads, so the standard is higher.

Yes.
All the time the Premier League keep drafting in foreign talent from every corner of the world - British players are forced to head into the lower leagues.
Ever since they gave 'the Prem' a new name, it has become another entity that bears no relation to 'English' football.

Moreover - The Championship is seeing the occasional relegated Prem side - filled with foreigners - coming down and keeping some of their migrant workers. Thus, opposing teams feel compelled to rival these odd rosters with a list of funny names from everywhere.
Where are the home-bred talents going? Not many go abroad, so - the lower divisions.... and the reserve teams of lower divisions.

What this should mean (and I think it is turning out this way), is that we are seeing a better quality of play in this division, and aging managers have to come to terms with managing that actuality. They *should* in fact be happy that they are of a higher calibre to previous times, as are the competition that they strive to be among.
With all due respect, they ARE mostly better managers, and the players they are working with are better professionals. Same goes for the players too - they also have to come to terms with and either enjoy it or bow out.

Kudos due for last night, for tactics, resolve, and stamina from all the squad.
