Harty tries to be the voice of the average fan. But, does let himself down at times by being too soft on Poodle and Knight. I don't think he wants to get banned! :lolol:

He's in a very difficult position being a real fan for years but also being in a position of responsibility re; what he says and does on air and in writing. I used to work with his brother and have met him a couple of times. All I'll say is that to me he's the genuine article and I'd rather have Harty on board than any number of Ward's or John Byrne's or the like (nothing personal against those two).

Just one small example of the man; My Dad was having trouble shifting me and my bro's tickets for a match we couldn't attend. He popped into Harty's funeral place and offered them to him. He took them with gratitude, chatted for some time about the Albion with my Dad and told him that if he ever needed any help with getting tickets or anything to do with the Albion he'd see what he could do.

Criticise his style if you don't like it, but he's got a big heart and this club means the world to him.

im not critisizing harty at all just a simple poll to gage peoples thoughts...i really enjoy listening to his show but feel some times he goes a bit far in his critiscism of Dick knight..but them he is a fan like the rest of us and probally just voices the frustrations that we share. But i honestly beleive that dick is doing all he can...

I don't suppose there will be a phone-in on Sunday, as they are covering the Woking game after ours.

Wasn't having a pop at you wilderbeast. Harty does come in for some pretty harsh stick on here though from some people.

Harty will always be a hero as far as I am concerned. In the dark, dark days of the 90's, before the internet and NSC existed, Gull's Eye was the voicepiece of the Albion fan. It made me piss myself with laughter on occasions, yet was the first to question some of the excesses of the board.

Harty has gone too far over the past year and his kicking in the match programme was thoroughly justified. However, he comes across as an intelligent guy and is therefore bright enough to realise he has to mend his fences with the club if the phone-in is not going to further degenerate into moaners' anonymous.

I believ that the club were totally out of order to have a pop at Harty in the program.

If they do not like what they hear they have ample opportunity to go onto the radio to voice their opinions. They can even phone in as ordinary supporters or cajole other supporters like LI to voice their concerns and disapproval of the phone in. An opposite view if nothing else would level the score and at the least stimulate a discussion that was not all one sided.

The problem is that when someone phones up and says "Dick Knight is a liar and the money from Alive and Kicking is going straight into his pocket", that isn't a point of view - it's a malicious libel. Harty shouldn't deal with it by saying "Well, listeners, what do you think? Let's hear another caller".

He needs to deal with stuff like that in exactly the way he deals with a caller who says "I'm fuckin' pissed off with this afternoon's performance" - cut them off and explain that his phone-in doesn't tolerate that sort of stuff.

Ian isn't a full-time professional broadcaster, of course. But he does sometimes need to show more a bit more professionalism - his army of listeners are entitled to that from the BBC.

Having said all that, he does bring a genuine fans' perspective to what he does. But, like all of us old 'uns, he might be getting a bit out of touch. Maybe he needs to meet more of the current generation of Albion supporters? Just because they phone him up at 5.15 doesn't mean that he knows them like he knew other fans in the old Gulls Eye days. I'd suggest that when he can travel to away matches, he spends an hour or so in the pub, rather than doing live pre-match stuff on the radio. Surely some of his pre-match contributions can be recorded and left in the 'capable' hands of his friend Colon?

Why on earth should the club start "cajoling" anyone to phone in on their behalf? A practice, I'd suggest, that is precisely what mars Harty's phone in at times. Because it's quite obvious that there's a consortium's worth of fantasy merchants happy to ring in and plug their murky agenda under the guise of being "just an ordinary fan".

Agree or disagree, the Club got straight to the point in the programme last week. They were pissed off, they said so. And they didn't hide behind other people to get their message across.

I think the club were right to answer the question in whatever way they felt appropriate.

I don't agree with everything the club does but I think to open a debate about the board being a bunch of fraudsters is a bit off.

I do not know but I would think that if only to increase the listening figures SCR would like another perspective of the arguments aired in order to provoke an on air discussion and as I said I am sure that there are many fans who listen and dont agree with what is said. The chance is there pick up the phone and dial in and you will have the agenda that YOU want on the phone in and not what fifi wants. or Bens Grandad

The BBC must be seen to present a fair and balanced perspective on all matters. It's in its Charter, is it not? Remember the way Thatcher lambasted the BBC for saying 'British soldiers' during the Falklands War instead of 'our soldiers'. She hated that, but a balance must be struck.

The point about Harty's phone-in is when someone makes a malicious accusation, sometimes in the form of a question (e.g. is Knight pocketing the money...?), Harty is not necessarily in a position to confirm or deny it. Therefore people come to a conclusion about Harty's agenda (if indeed he has one), and he can't win either way.

I actually thought the original, and pervading, intention of the phone-in was to voice an opinion on the match. But we also ought to be able to state our concerns about the running of the club. However, the club should also insist on being able to have the right of reply. Unfortunately, the format of the show doesn't always allow for that.

I don't think it would not necessarily sanitise the show if questions were presented to the club a little (an hour?) in advance of the programme in order that they be answered on air. It may be unworkable; some may feel that the phone-in is the wrong platform for it. Whatever.

I would say that I can understand the club's grievance with Harty to a point, but stating it through the club programme was probably not the best way to do it.
