Good move.

Reid is a central midfielder, not a winger, and as a result we always lack width when he starts because he drifts infield.

Shame McGhee is sticking with Oatway as I'd rather see Reid partner Carpenter in the middle but if we're going to sit back and try to hit Bristol on the break then that's probably the way to go.

He probably wants the option of subbing Oatway with Reid later in the game depending on the score
or if Hart does get a yellow then bringing Reid on so that we don't lose Hart.

I agree Reid is a central player so the first would be the better option.

Yes but why start with Oatway in the first place as he can't tackle and pushes us on to the back foot. He was the main reason for our problems against Swinedon. Remember how we improved 100% when McGhee finally brought him off against Notts County.

unfortunatly in most games (this being no exception) you need a ball winner or a grafter to get things going a bit. oatway is the only player we have that does this. we dont want to leave our defence exposed. this is why we dont rate our midfield too highly. we need a better ball winner. the others are ok. unless you have a gerrard, viera, keane, makalele in midfield the others dont shine.
all teams need this ball winner ours is oatway. a position to strengthen i think.??? then you never know hart could be like beckham and carpenter would be like lampard, jones like pires and we win the premiership. the dreaming has already started sorry. i have had a few...:drink:

and if we are losing with 20 mins left get oatway off for reid.

Don't agree with that I'm afraid.

Last time we were in this division Taylor got shot of Oatway and brought in Junior Lewis. Lewis was a more creative player and Carpenter did more of the 'grafting'. Also, having Lewis alongside side him improved Chippy 100%. This season he's had Oatway back with him and has had to work twice as hard.

I think if we had Reid and Carpenter in the middle then Chippy would drop back to protect the defence and leave Reid to get forward.

Hang on. How often does Oatway actually win the ball? Our ball winner is Carpenter. Watch carefully and see how often Charlie wins tackles especially away from the touch lines.

making carpenter the ball winner.. so we do have 2 off them maybe a bit late to totally change chippys game plan though.

Interesting debate.

I take the point about the benefit of Oatway being what we need as he gets stuck in but Chippy has always looked better with a class player alongside him. Reid may be that sort of player that would complement his style - like Lewis, Sidwell, Rodger have in the past couple of years.

I agree with starting with Hart - but it needs to be the old OGH pre broken leg and for 20 mins last Thursday, not the shadow of his former self we've seen over recent months.

Oatway is brilliant at nullifying opposition players and keeping them out of the game.
If you need man to man markiing then Oatway is your man.

It is an unseen job and thankless.

McGhee has Piercey and Reid to bring on whenever he likes so the starting line up is good.
