Kerry Mayo and Gary Hart are poised to stay with Albion for another year.

The long-serving pair are among the 15 players out of contract next month.

The Argus understands Mayo and Hart have appearance-related clauses written into their current deals.

Both have reached the required number of games this season to trigger new offers.

Defender Mayo made 30 League One appearances for Dean Wilkins' strugglers, 28 of them in the starting line-up.

The versatile Hart played in 23 League matches, seven of them as a substitute, in defence, midfield and attack.

Mayo, 29, has risen right through the ranks. He celebrates ten seasons with the Seagulls with a testimonial against Reading at Withdean on July 28.

His close friend Hart, 30, has given Albion nine years service since signing from non-League Essex club Stansted for £1,000.

The other 13 players waiting to resolve their futures are headed by Guy Butters, Michel Kuipers and Alexis Bertin, plus long-term injury victims Charlie Oatway, Paul Reid and Adam Hinshelwood.

Georges Santos is sure to go, while youngsters Sam Rents, Doug Loft, Wes Fogden, Richard Martin, Chris Breach and Paul Hinshelwood will discover their fates with the rest next week once the players are back from a break in Prague.

I'm pleased, think they can both do jobs. Not sure if they'll be offered a decent wage though, or if they'll actually sign the deal. Will Wilkins actually play Hart?

Off the field, Gary Hart is a top bloke. I saw him about three weeks ago and the first thing he said to me was 'last time I saw you, you were really drunk - and the time before that...'

Nice to know he looks out for his fans so well.

That is a f***ing joke. Can just about see why it might be worth keeping Hart but Mayo. If this does happen my expectations for next year are dropping rapidly.

It would suggest that Knight has no intention of actually signing a decent left back, and is relying on the youngsters to come through, as Mayo always seems te be on the appearance related contracts.

He got lucky with Harding, who then duly buggered off. Looks like it's up to Rents and Cobbs to make it....or for all three left backs to have disasterous spells in order to persuade Knight to actually sign someone...

Yeah agreed Les. Hart isn't too bad, because while he isn't really a first choice in any position, he does at least offer ADEQUATE cover in a few. Mayo is just beyond belief:nono:

Spot on, Hart is versitile and look competent. Mayo just seems to get worse but yet he still gets a contract. He is conference standard. A step backwards as far as I can see.

I can't work out whether it would have been sad to see Mayo's testimonial knowing it'd be his last game for us or whether it would be a fitting end to his career with us.

Not that it seems that matters now

Has anybody considered the overall benefits that the Club gets by showing loyalty to its staff? I would imagine that this encourages the younger players to want to stay and develop their skills here, rather than rush off to the first place that waves a fifty pound note under their noses.

I disagree, I think they see Mayo as a valuable asset to the club. They play him at LB until he has gone from passable to dreadful (usually takes about 3 games), ahead of Rents without even trying to get another LB in, they play him at RB and CM at the expense of other players who are actually more suited in those positions.

It worries me that they actually see Mayo as meriting his place in the squad because he doesn't.

You're are of course right. Now all the shit ones will stick around because they will think 'f*** me if Kerry can get another year so can I'.

Hopefully they WON'T have similar clauses written in this time around, surely not very sensible, especially if they only need to play in about half the games.....

Pleased Hart will stay on, Mayo's had a crap season but you never know, he may come good as he has done in the past..

For what it's worth, I'm delighted Hart and Mayo are being offered contracts. I only hope they accept.

Why? I don't mean that in a confrontational sense I genuinely can't see the benefits of resigning Mayo at all.

Not if Dean Wilkins doesn't want them they won't.

He won't have a choice, they will all have clauses saying if they kick a football within 10 feet of Withdean they automatically get a new contract.

I, and I would imagine Bag also, do not have anything personal against Mayo just not sure its in the best interests of the team to resign a player who gets mugged by strikers and wingers on a regular basis.

I guess that's opinion. Personally, i think Mayo gets a lot of stick a bit harshly. Granted, he's not particularly good, but i don't think he's as bad as the likes of you make out. I think 'ok' sums him up.

He may not deserve a place in the starting line up (he lacks pace and is error prone), but he does i think in the squad, for similar reasons to Hart. He's versatile (can 'do a job' at CB, LB, LWB, LM, CM), and actually has some experience that i suspect a lot of the younger ones can learn one.

I also can't see the board actually wanting to HAVE to sign anybody, as we are notoriously shit at getting the players we need, and they don't want spend money when we already have a capable player there.

Hart will be getting a testimonial (if it's not cocked up!). He thoroughly deserves it i think.
