If you're eating in rather than a takeaway there are only 2 decent places to go , Bankers or Bardsleys.

Don't get me wrong, Bankers is good, but surely it can't be mentioned in the same breath as Bardsleys, which is regularly voted one of the best chippies in the country

Shoreham Beach
I thought it was only the tourists keeping Ramsdens open. They picked up a big fine a couple of years back for bad hygiene and if ever you needed an excuse to give a chain a miss this is it.

Listen to the good people of NSC and try somewhere else. Besides Shoreham has at least two fish and chip places to match any of those good recommendations on this thread.

Well the Huts considered it a pretty good meal when all said and done.

Yes, people would drive for miles to eat in or have the takeaway. Proper beef dripping for the fat, piping hot and crispy batter. I haven't been there for years but have heard that that has gone downhill now as well.

The whole brand is operated as a fast food chain (not franchised) and after a very difficult period when standards fell and they nearly went under they have started to turn it round. The product is consistent and the service is generally much improved. Overall they probably merit an "OK" rating. However, as a fast food chain it is to fish and chips what McDonalds is to prime beefsteak. Beyond retaining the name, any link to the original outlet and the product that made HR a brand worthy of rolling-out nationally is long gone.

Restaurant expansion is based on joint-venture franchising. Suitable franchisees are sought and the company takes between a 20 and 40 per cent stake in their equity. That gives Ramsden's leverage and royalties without huge capital investment. It also gives it the local knowledge of each franchise company about the peculiar sensibilities of their area. Trumpeting the qualities of Yorkshire and England, for instance, does not go down well in Glasgow.

apologies - you are quite right. The key lies in their ability to control standards and that has improved greatly from its nadir of 5 or so years ago. It is now generally "of a standard" wherever you may be - nearly as good indeed as my local chippy and I am about as far from the sea as you can get in this country.

For the best fish & chip experience in the UK I would heartily recommend Mary Jane's in Cromer - meltingly mouthwatering fresh fish and clean crisp chips. Delicious!

If you're ever in Seaford, Trawlers has been doing great fish and chips since I were a lad.
