after the disappointment of Doom3 (so far completed 5-6 levels and its pants) I am eagerly awaiting the release of HL2 & Counter-Strike2, these games are worth buying new PCs for alone! shame I cant afford it :(
anyway...

From BBC News:

Half-Life 2 appears to be finished and could soon be on sale.
The long-awaited sequel has no official release date, but game maker Valve has started letting members of its online community get hold of encrypted copies.

When officially launched, downloaders will be able to buy codes to access the encrypted files and start playing immediately.

But Valve is facing criticism online for making the game available, but not actually letting people play it.

Waiting to play

The 500MB file containing the encrypted game was put on machines serving Valve's Steam community on 26 August.

Steam is software that lets members take each other on in Counter-Strike games and lets them get hold of updates to Valve games.

Oh dear. The subtleties of Doom 3 are clearly lost on you.

first impressions count and mine are that its crap!

Having said that I need mroe power under my hood as my iccle setup cannot handle the game properly. No doubt when I do eventually get a kit worth bragging about I'll be able to see Doom3 in all its glory and then really enjoy it. But at the moment it looks like avery dark version of Doom2 but with better graphics and cutscenes, certainly no reply value hence i've dropped it for FarCry & Counter Strike for now!

Half-Life 2 will be BRILLIANT.

I absolutely LOVED its predecessor "No-Life" though.

Specially that level where you stay in on your own all night with a Pot Noodle, two cans of Woodpecker, and Babestation on Sky. Christ, I must have spent 3 months completing that level, but what a RUSH when I finally got through it.

That end-of-level boss though, when you have to ring three people who you used to know at school to see if they fancy popping round to see your new modem...whoa. That was a bitch.

indeed, HL is the best selling game EVER... not bad especially considering you've been able to download it for free for the last few years.

Oh, and I'd like CrabtreeBHA to realise that most of HL2 and *all* of HL1 was id code. HL1 was built on a nasty mix of Quake, QuakeWorld and Quake II, all under licence from id. Just new graphics added.

Er, not it's not. It's something like 14th in the best-selling games of all time.

The best-selling PC game, by several million now, is The Sims.

Half-Life 2 uses Valve's own Source engine, not software/technology from id Software.

Source is based on licenced id source (as in code, note the small s). Not as heavily as HL was, but it is still using id technology, namely rendering.

Myst shifted millions. And millions. And millions.

Because it was too damn big to pirate on floppies or the web and no-one had a CD burner.

Sims has outsold Myst though.

Doom and Quake have both outsold HL though.

Y'all can talk all you want about Half life or the sims or whatever.

Sit down, ring some mates, put a pot on and play Super Mario Kart.

The best game ever.

I beg to differ... though i was wrong in my original statement, a little out of date. Suprisingly, i have been able to find a concreate list of the top ten PC games, best i can find is top video games (in which HL is 15th). Stripping out the consoles the list is:

1. The Sims, 10 million
2. Half Life, 8 million
3. Myst, 7 million

Id love if you'd prove otherwise as its really buging me now :glare:
