Guy Butters - a quandry

I genuinely think he is in with a chance of winning Player of the Year, and rightly so after making one of the best comebacks a player ever has in our history - I'll definitely be voting for him.

BUT.. I can't help thinking he might not be here next season as I suspect the club will offer him a contract but on greatly reduced terms (he is amongst the top 2 or 3 paid players at the club) - and will he be willing to take the huge drop that it will be?

OR.. will he think he's on to a good thing here, and that no-one else would want him anyway??? And therefore accept reduced terms?

Depends if we get promoted too. In Div 2 his experience means that he's usually in the right place at the right time, but I think his lack of mobility would be exposed in Div 1.

I think if we stay down we might get rid of Blackwell (too injury prone). If we go up then it will be Butters who goes.

It's also possible that Danny Cullip might get poached if we don't go up in which case we would keep both Blackwell and Butters.

Don't forget we also have El-Abd, Virgo and Hinsh.

Blackwell or Butters ? Don't need both

Don't wanna sound too cynical but what if Coppell wants to sign Blackwell next season? We've paid his wages all this season and haven't seen a game from him yet. It was Coppell who decided to pay him after his injury even though he hadn't accepted a contract. Could we blame him for going or should we expect the same loyalty from him to repay our (Coppell's) faith?

Coppell didn't rate him that highly as the contract he was offered was on lower terms than before.

Butters has been a revelation this season IMHO. Solid as a rock. Says a lot for the bloke that the last poll on here had him in the frame for Player Of The Year, about 2:1 ahead of Leon Knight. Which is well weird. Normally you'd expect a player that scores 20 goals in a season (probably nearer 30 by the time the season's played out) would walk the Player Of The Year gig, but reaction to Leon's goal tally is strangely subdued. Like I posted on another thread, can't actually remember him scoring a single magical goal (unlike BZ who got dozens) tho it has to be said he takes a good penalty. Maybe we're spoiled now, and assume we'll ALWAYS have somebody up front who can score twenty goals in a season. Strange times.

Overheard yesterday that Butters is going to retire at the end of the season - may just be idle gossip but it may mean that this thread is obsolete.

Probably the main reason season ticket applications have come out so early is because we can't cover costs for the end of this season. So if we're using next seasons money to cover this season, what do we do about next season? Easy, slash the wage bill. I expect to see any 2 of Cullip, Blackwell and Butters leave the club.

The only way Blackwell or Butters will stay at the club, I think, would be for them to take a big wage cut on their new contract. Danny's in contract and worth whatever we're paying him

I will vote Butters player of the season.

I really hope Knight or Cullip don't win it.

Why not Knight or Cullip? Butters hasn't been clearly miles better than either of them

No but Cullip by his standards hasn't had a very good season-and Knight looks like he hasn't tried particularly.

Butters has been the model professional; after all the stick he got he could have gone the way of Kitson:)tosser:) but no, he stuck at it, put in 100% effort and has put in solid performances all season.
