Ah well there's the difference between us. I'm struggling to understand how any other football fan could possibly object to that comment. What's he supposed to shout?"Gus Poyet was a great player and is a brilliant manager?" Or maybe he shouldn't have said anything at all?

There is obviously a line between banter and abuse, but as reported that, to me, falls well within the 'banter' category. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying it's the difference between old school fans and the modern "sit down and don't say anything rude" brigade.

I'd go along with all that. I've abused players in the past, I'm not about to cry if someone calls our manager a rent boy

If Poyet was racially abused it would be against the law. Homophobic abuse is equally against the law. It comes under Hate Crime legislation.
The Tranmere fan was lucky that he wasn't arrested by police rather than just ejected by a steward.
But did that qualify as homophobic abuse? Ya big northern poof! [Kissing smilie to indicate poof comment is tongue in cheek]

But who's tongue in who's cheek.:wink: [winking smilies to show I'm playing along]

In seriousness like all non physical abuse it can be dressed up as "it was a joke".
If it causes aoffence it is abuse (my condensing of a typical statement in work handbooks about conduct & dispute resolution in the workplace).
If the chap was up before the beak rentboy would be a recognised term of homophobic abuse.

I'm struggling to believe people actually seem to be defending someone who shouted out "Gus Poyet is a Chelsea rentboy". Sounds like the twat was rightfully ejected if Gus heard it and surprisingly, didn't like it!

Jesus. From where I am sitting (my sofa) that seems to be a pretty innocuous comment. Hardly worth traipsing up into a stand and ejecting the fellow. Granted, it is not a compliment and an ill-advised comment, but it seems a tad lukewarm to throw someone out for.

I agree with Brovion. I'm not convinced that calling someone a 'rentboy' is homophobic abuse. I'm not entirely convinced that Poyet reported it either. He has been there and done it (not the rentboy business) and I'm sure he has faced nasty chants before.

I think you are probably right about Poyet reporting it-not sure he would have bothered to be honest. Equally I don't believe that makes it ok. Maybe it is this thing about people thinking things are acceptable at football that wouldn't be in any other section of life. If some body walked up to Poyet in the street and called him a rent boy would that be acceptable?- in my opinion no but I do except that things can be more acceptable at a match. For instance I personally choose not to swear but provided people aren't just swearing for the sake of it or aren't sitting in the family stand it doesn't annoy me during a game. Not sure if this post makes much sense but hope you get the gist.

I think Gus took offence to being called a CHELSEA rent boy, from my understanding he did all his male escort work whilst at Spurs, and a little at Leeds, but was considered too pretty for the clientele there.

As for getting hot under the collar about it, fairly pathetic. We were more than happy to sing 'we pay your benefits' and other workshy related songs at Tranny yesterday, so shouldn't get all Queen Mother about something coming back our way.

You would say that, wouldn't you?

I'd hope comments such as that would be water off of a ducks back to any experienced pro. If Poyet really had been offended and affected by that comment then I'd have to question his suitability to be a manager!

In all probability Gus did ignore the comment BUT under the ground regulations the steward was required to take action, as homophobic abuse is no different from racist abuse, it is unacceptable in a civilised society.

I would have thought Gus would have just turned and laughed at the comment for its utter crappiness and lack of imagination. I'm sure he has heard much worse over the years.

I agree with Brovion football banter is all part of the package for an enjoyable match, in fact over the past seasons its whats made it worthwhile when the results and standard of play have been so poor.
The stewards are best employed in dealing with the those who stand up as soon as the ball passes over the half way line, completely blocking the view of all who sit behind them.If this problem is not dealt with as soon as Falmer opens then the long wait for a new stadium will be a big dis-appointment.
