Greece qualified for the second stage after their draw with Spain. Should make Sunday's game Spain v Portugal just that extra bit tasty since the loser will be out!

How many thought the Greeks would qualify?

How would England fancy playing the Greeks in the next round?

I don't particualry want to play them. They have seemed a very well organised team with good individual players. But we knew that already of course ;)

Since both games are played at the same time, we could see some interesting stuff going on in the last ten minutes, particularly if Spain and Portugal are playing to Eurovision Song Contest rules.

Not necessarily.

If Russia beat Greece by 2 goals and Portugal beat Spain by 1 goal, Portugal and Spain qualify.

This is how the BBC website explain it

P W D L GF GA Pts
Greece 2 1 1 0 3 2 4
Spain 2 1 1 0 2 1 4
Portugal 2 1 0 1 3 2 3
Russia 2 0 0 2 0 3 0

The top two qualify for the quarter-finals.
Russia now cannot qualify.

Group A situation explained

If Greece avoid defeat against Russia, they will qualify for the quarter-finals.
If Spain avoid defeat against Portugal, they will qualify for the quarter-finals.
Portugal must beat Spain to reach the quarter-finals.
Russia have already been eliminated.
If Spain lose against Portugal, they can only reach the quarter-finals if Russia beat Greece by a greater margin than Spain lose to Portugal OR if the goal difference is equal (between Spain and Greece) and Spain have scored the same or greater number of goals in all three group matches as Greece.
If Greece lose to Russia, they will only be eliminated if Portugal beat Spain by a smaller margin than Greece lose to Russia OR if the goal difference is equal (between Spain and Greece) and Spain have scored the same or greater number of goals in all three group matches as Greece.

Makes perfect sense to me. If Greece win or draw they go through. They will only go out if thet lose by more goals then Spain. ie if Portgaul win 2-0 greece can still lose 1-0 and go through.

I would rather play greece than spain or portugal

grecce are organised resilant but dont stand out as team with players who can turn games

the other two teams are unpredictable which makes them a tought team to play we all know how the greeks will play.

Would definitely rather play Greece than Spain or the hosts.

Let's hope they win their group (on the grounds that we're unlikely to and will therefore play the first place team from Group A).

I'd rather get through and play ANYONE, after all if we do get through and cant beat Spain or Greece or Portugal then we aint good enough to win the tournament obviously!
I'd much prefer a harder route as we play better against the better teams and winning will mean that much more, especially if we get through and beat the hosts in the next round.

All this "I want Greece" is complete balls as they themselves beat Spain away in the qualifiers and if they win the group then they are worthy of that feat.

I was in Athens for the Portugal game, and the place went bonkers. They were all quietly confident that they could finally win a game in a tournament, especially with knowing how close they ran us at Old Trafford.

They only have a couple of players that still play in Greece, and the quality from Roma, Inter, Athletico and of course Bolton shows they are no push over. Wouldn't care who we get as long as we get through, but don't take the Greeks for granted if it's them we play.
