Sorry to correct you but the album that was on was 101 Damnations.

30Something, their second album, is one of the best of all time. FACT.

As you say, some legendary lyrics.

That's the one! Lost the tape sometime in the mid-90s. Cheers

Surely the only way to resolve what the ten greatest indie anthems are is for everyone to list their top ten, then someone who's that way inclined can work out which ten have been nominated the most.

Easy.

Problem with these lists is that they're made up by journalists, with readers having a little influence.

They're designed purely to get people buying magazines and talking about the brands on messageboards.

Would be more legit - and interesting - if they were actually decided by votes, with complete transparency of the process/results.

Exactly, for example the only reason the Gossip ar eon the top 50 is because they are one of th ebands NME are pushing not because they have written a song worthy of a true top 50 list.

Stupid list but at least they got the number 1 right.

 as I pointed out last night. Only one I know/North Country Boy both worthy additions.

No happy Mondays, no Sugarcubes, no Cure, no New Order....... piss poor selection without them.

and any list that does not include New Order/Joy Division, The Fall, The The, Talk Talk, The Sugarcubes is not gonna get my vote.

The original of recording 'Talk, Talk' when they were known as The Reaction was a lot better than the 80's version, more politically motivated and no poxy keyboards.

The Man Don't Give A F*ck - SFA

Boys And Girls - Blur

Blue Monday - New Order

Step On - Happy Mondays

The Only One I Know - The Charlatans

Sorted For E's And Whizz - Pulp

Debaser - Pixies

How the HELL did some of those songs make it on the list?

9 The Strokes - 'Last Nite'
10 Arctic Monkeys - 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'

What does everybody think?

I'd agree with the top TWO, in that order. Nice to see no Blur at all, but no way would 'Common people' make my top three - 'Sorted for E's & Wizz' at a pinch, but not 'Common People'. I'd also have 'Girl from Mars' (Ash) in there, and no Strokes & no Libertines. Oh, and 'I Bet You Look good On The Dancefloor' about number three or four. And 'Hand In Glove' as the only Smiths entry. And chuck in st. Etienne 'Hes On The Phone' and Garbage 'Im Only Happy when It Rains' and we're almost there.

Golden age of indie pop classics, has to be said.

Thanks for the reminder, that NME are a pile of shite not worth reading.

MOJO is a decent music mag, nme is a waste of money.

I don't know about 'anthems', but decent 'indie', according to NMH'

Chameleons - In Shreds
Supergrass - Richard The 3rd
Stereophonics - Dakota
Charlatans - The Only One I Know
Catherine Wheel - I Want To Touch You
Love and Rockets - Express
Simple Minds - Love Song
Ride - Like a Daydream
Kula Shaker - Tattva
Screaming Trees - Make My Mind

subs would include Human League - Being Boiled, or Seconds.
Heartthrobs - Dreamtime
The Damned - Shadow Of Love
Lush - Sweetness and Light
Smiths - Spring Heeled Jim
Modern English - Gathering Dust
Wah! - 7 Minutes To Midnight
New Order - True Faith
Carter - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere

From the above list, I might have included;
Smiths - How Soon is Now
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Stone Roses - though probably another track.
