Randy Holden - officially the "greatest guitarist you've never heard of". Could have been big if he hadn't passed up a chance to join the Yardbirds. Instead he ended up playing in forgotten (and rightly so) groups like The Other Half and Blue Cheer.

But by turning his amplifiers up to 11 in the mid-60s, he arguably/allegedly influenced the heavy blues of both Hendrix and Cream, and was playing doom laden metal riffs three years before Black Sabbath 'invented' them.

What about Richard Marx? Why is he not on that list??

:jester:

NMH, Richard Marx is not a guitarist. I NEVER said Richard Marx was a great guitarist. I said the kid is a great guitarist who happens to be playing a Richard Marx tune, which I think is a great tune. Take or it leave it. Is that clear to you or shall I explain it again ? :dunce:

Duane Allman is a great shout and his replacement Dicky Betts

Also Ernie Isley ( witness the guitar solo on Summer Breeze and Whose That Lady)

I saw Focus at Hammersmith in 1976 and Brixton in 1977 ( hamburger Concerto tour I think it was)

Akkerman was/is a superb guitarist and one of them "pure sound" type instrumentalists.

He wasn't bothered about avoiding commercialism, in favour of furthering his art. I just picked up a minty copy of 'Mother Focus' the other day, and it's a step away from the heavy prog he was playing before. His solo material presents baroque instruments and styles, and as you can see from the video above - he's still 'got it'!
