Cue gratuitous bad spelling for hilarious comic effect...

Not that anyone has been trying to prove my point.

A list of some of the more common errors:

There / their / they're
Your / you're
Were / We're (they don't even sound the same)

NB: There are two common purposes for an apostrophe (although there are others). They are (a) possessive (b) contraction.

Possessive
Used after a noun and usually followed by an 's' to indicate that article's possession. e.g. Alan's computer, Mary's car. The additional 's' is not used when the noun ends with an 's'. e.g. James' house, the supporters' club (Some branches of linguistics do use this extra 's' - it is known as the Oxford plural). Be careful when using these. The supporter's club is the club belonging to an individual. The supporters' club belongs to many people.

This is NOT the case for the possessive associated with a pronoun. e.g its, theirs, yours.

Contraction
Used to indicate missing letters. e.g. do not becomes don't, was not becomes wasn't, it is becomes it's.

These may not be the dictionary's defintions, but they are the basic outline rules. As with all rules in the English language, there are exceptions, but you won't go too far wrong with these.

Don't bother thanking me - just get it right. :p

Why do people have such difficulty with "lose" (pronounced looz) and "loose" (looss). People always get them mixed up.

Same applies to "breath" (breth) and "breathe" (breeth).

*tch*

May I suggest that a couple of pedants point out bad grammar and punctuation after each post? Genuine spelling mistakes may be forgiven, but bad English won't.

I nominate: Easy 10 and Dave the Gaffer.

Bye.

I think this thread is a cue for Wozza to make a burst of posting, correcting all the spelling and grammar mistakes that he has noticed over the past week.

:p

Just joking Richie

I get sick of Wozza going on when I on few occasions get stick from him for making a little spelling error. Why don't he just leave me alone.

Theres a difference between spelling mistakes and typing errors.
'Should of' instead of 'should have' gets me

I make a lot of mistakes. I admit that. It is not because I cannot spell or because my grammer is bad. It is because this is only an internet message board and I cannot really be arsed to check through every post I write for spelling and grammer. I assumed (wrongly) that people on here would not be so pedantic.
