Whats the difference between the two? BDO and PDC is it just about money?

The BDO was formed in the early 1970s and was effectively the world governing body.

Back in the late 1970s til about the mid 1980s there were several tournaments on both BBC and ITV, all with a reasonable amount of coverage, some live, but mostly highlights.

By the early 90s it was down to 1, the World Championship at Lakeside. So, as they felt they could no longer make a living, the top professional players (14-16 of them) decided to break away and set up their own circuit (originally the World Darts Council) with more televised tournaments, with the help of Sky.

The BDO continues to run most of darts right down to the grass roots, while the PDC deals exclusively with professional tournaments. With the Sky influence, there is a reasoanble amount of money in the PDC, meaning that there are now quite a few full time pros, whereas because the BDO has a much wider area to deal with there is less money for the pros.

What a game Hankey V Taylor was. Shame it was only best of 9 legs.

Great to see the crowd give best of order to both players. Hankey played very well and deserved the win.

Agreed, it was an absolute crackerjack of a game.

I think Hankey is winning the crowd over, a few isolated cat calls apart the crowd gave him the best of order. Teriffic performance and with that the tournament looks wide open.

The Grand Slam tends to favour the BDO players I think with its very limited no of legs.
Would Hankey have beaten Taylor who is notoriously slow starter had it been over 9 sets?

With this short form of darts one or two bad legs can throw the game. Last night my son played a very good 1st leg, like a novice in the 2nd and then a 10 darter to win the game so it just shows how 1 or 2 good legs can win a match with this form of play.

I love this format, it's short and sharp but with the group stages everyone gets three games so the cream should still rise.

Wednesday's game between Taylor & Newton could be interesting. IF Newton can find his A game, there is a fair chance that he could take out Taylor who would then be out. I may be wrong but I think that all previous (twice) occassions that Taylor had lost in the group stages, he had previously won his opening two games, thus already qualifiying for the 2nd round. There will be a bit more pressure on Taylor, especially as he is still getting used to wearing glasses. Time will tell.

Was going to mention what a difference Taylor not wearing his glasses was last night. Whether it was psychological or not, but he was back to his old self, apart from a few missed doubles, he looks like the man they have all got to beat again.

Looking forward to those 2nd round games, some absolute belters in there.

No women this year???

Sky wouldn't have women so it's men only. Even when the women were on they didn't have the undisputed best womens player in the world in any case.

Yep, I'm looking forward to it. Gary Anderson one to watch. Would love to see Nicholson do well to - a decent run to the s/f or Final might cement his place in the 2012 Prem League.

Nicholson needs to win his group, as his is paired off against Taylors group in the last 16, so his game against Wes Newton in the groups takes on monumental proportions, if he wins that I fancy he could make at least the last four. The Wolverhampton crowd will be baying for him but that just seems to make him play better.
