Two points.

1. Given just how far up his own arse Poll always was as a ref, how well do you think he would have liked one of his former colleagues criticising all his decisions on telly on a Sunday night?

2. After watching the clip of Defoe's goal against Reading when he was clearly miles inside the area when Keane took the penalty, he stated that the penalty should NOT have been retaken, but that the correct decision for encroachment should have been an indirect free kick to Reading.

Now if he's right [and he ought to know!] has anybody EVER seen this rule applied? Because we've all seen penalties retaken, and I've never once heard anybody question the validity of the decision.

never ever seen that for a encroachment. 9 /10 times ref's seem to blatantly ignore this rule anyway.

Also , Poll said the Derby player would of got a straight red for the way he went in on Friedel......to me it looked like no contact as well.....i was drunk though

According to Poll there should have been 3 reds in that game! I actually agreed with him on the Eddie Lewis challenge on Freidel though. He clearly had the ball and Lewis had no reason at all to leave his foot in, except to kick him in the head!

If its saved and cleared its not a retake if he scores there is a retake.

That is certainly the accepted view, but NOT CORRECT according to Poll. He stated that the correct punishment for another attacking player encroaching should be an indirect free-kick to the defending team.

I reckon there'd be a near riot if a ref gave that decision!

Well in general play,when someone shoots and the ball is saved,if a player was beyond the last defender when the ball was struck it's given as offside. Can't see why its different in penalties.

Always made me laugh that you cant be off side from a corner, being off side at a corner would take some doing.

Law 14 - The Penalty Kick states

A team-mate of the player taking the kick infringes the Laws of the Game:

the referee allows the kick to proceed -
if the ball enters the goal, the kick is retaken
if the ball does not enter the goal, the
referee stops play and restarts the match with
an indirect free kick to the defending team
from the place where the infringement
occurred

Poll is correct in this case.

I think you'll find most referee's assume that no advantage has been gained when a penalty is either saved or missed, so no other action is necessary by them.

Be interesting to see if that happens now. I must admit, a couple of years ago, encroachment was being really clamped down on, but it seems to be getting worse again now.

Poll would have shown the same player three red cards before he realised that he had already sent him off twice.

Used to be this way, but it changed about 2 years ago to an IFK. Lot's of refs are still getting it wrong. I'm a ref instructor and we've been told to hammer this in our recertification classes (over here at least).

It was just on trial in certain leagues/cups. I liked it too, but evidently the powers that be decided not to pursue it further.
