When I was a teenager in the North stand in the early 90's Peter Ward was almost a mythical figure... someone who was a legend at the Albion, but I had never seen play and was never seen on TV as a commentator or pundit. He was like a silver glimmering unicorn of a footballer.

Nowadays he's always f***ing over. Playing pool, being a match guest every five minutes, and generally just getting his face in all sorts of photo's. He's gone from being a mythical unicorn to being just another face. And to top it off, he's going bald and he's got a stupid tash.

Shattered my illusions.

Totally agree. Never saw him play but was always told about him and thought of him as some kind of demi-God, and now all of a sudden he's here every five minutes, being hero worshipped by a group of men even older than he is, all desperate to play pool and pretend they are friends with a washed up, leather skinned, balding, moustachioed northerner who should be enjoying his retirement in the sunshine, rather hopping across the Atlantic every five minutes to lap up some more adulation and get some drinks bought for him. I notice none of the other ex Albion greats do this, can you imagine Zamora doing it in 30 years time? I think not.

Precisely Commander. I imagined him to be dining with kings and queens, swimming with mermaids, and slaying dragons. Instead he's playing pool in a dingy old pub surrounded by 50 year olds from Southwick and Lancing. Probably listening to Coldplay

'NEVER become friends with your heroes' I was told. I should have listened. He is a great bloke but he has one flaw which I will not discuss. And I love his Mum and Dad. Has he shown his legions of worshippers his Man United tattoo?

Anyway I will be at the REMF game. Saw Rob's memorial at Ground zero earlier this year. Keep up the good work.

What is this? Or is it his name on a stone or something?

As someone of roughly the same generation, that is an absolutely spot-on observation!!

I have to say, I was terribly excited when he wanted to be my "friend" on Spacebook, and ever since he's added lots of Coldplay and Adele songs, and lame jokes and soppy postulations. It's been a little disappointing. Yes, you should avoid getting close to people on pedestals in your head.

There are two fountains (memorials) representing the North and South towers. All the victims names are on there. I can post a picture on here from home later or PM you. I think someone else may have a photo and post on here before waiting for me.

Just one small point to make, its mainly his wife that puts things on Facebook rather than Wardy himself. It was her account originally and then added his name to it a couple of years ago.

I wonder if Vicente will play in a REMF game in 20 years time? I look forward to reading about how he DEMOLISHED 13 paellas and drank a gallon of sangria in one sitting. LEGEND!

He would still look BEAUTIFUL even in 20 years. He would look like a tanned Leslie Grantham

For those who never had the priviledge of following the albion in Wardy's days, it was like having Vicente in our team, but for several seasons. He was just so exciting to watch and although he didn't have Vicente's skill and vision, he was lightening quick, left defenders on their arses and scored goals for fun. Oh for a forward like him today.
He is now both a legend and a fan and we should welcome that. He loves the club and as far as I am concerned has a free beer ticket in Brighton for life.

Yes we should all keep our idols at arms lenght or if we do get close to them try to remember they are footballers and not politicians... one drink with Steve Foster was enough to shatter a 1,000 illusions.

Never spoken to wardy never wanted to loved him when i was a kid and always will.

Watching Jimmy Case so drunk he was unable to speak walk and looking like someone who queues up at 8.30am outside Wetherspoons when we had the Albion do at the grand was fun.
