Ah thanks for posting that vid - i remember why that one left such a bitter taste now. Whether you think it's a red or not you can see how those slimey Portugese got Rooney sent off. The ref just gave a free kick and put his arm out and that would've been the end of it. Then that c.unt Ronaldo etc go over to the ref and there's some pushing - then the ref bottles it and sends him off. There's no way he was gonna give him a red if you watch. Refs usually run over to the player and show the red straight away - he didn't - he just gave the FKick - not even a word with Rooney. Of course i can see why he's been sent off but that ref really f***ed me off...

If you watch that video, you'll notice the first 5 YEARS of it is Rooney getting fouled by two players. Why on earth didn't the ref blow up sooner? You could see what the Portugal players were trying to do.

What a f***ing disgrace Ronaldo is there. Thats his Man Utd team-mate. I can't believe Rooney forgave him for that.

If I was playing football against you, and then you ran over to the ref to try and get me sent off..... and then winked at your team-mates afterward, I'd want to bloody kill you!

Time and time again this sort of thing has been happening.

The authorities need to back the referees so that they can speak to the offenders and the captains only. Start dishing out yellow cards to those that involve themselves and they will soon stop it. They must follow the example that rugby has set.

The Portuguese were a disgrace that day, but they are not the only offenders.

The problem is The English keep on falling for it getting players sent off in big games.

EXACTLY. If we didn't STAMP on their GONADS, or kick them as they walked past, then they'd have nothing to CRY to the ref ABOUT.

Top article! I've been saying this for years. There is often very little between the top teams at a tournament and whilst consistent performance is obviously very important luck is very much needed. Apart from anything else you need an injury free team, which is luck itself.

Anyone who doubts this should look at our league championship run when we pipped Reading. Huge amount of injury free and lucky results, the Bristol City Lee Steele home win being the ultimate example.

Although I'm not sure I buy the whole "England are always unlucky" stuff, I've never understood the "England are just not good enough" bullshit that people - unable to form actual worthwhile and thought-out opinions - so tiresomely and lazily trot out.

Out of all the World Cups in my lifetime that we have qualified for (6), we have gone out of 1 without losing a single game (82), we have gone out of 3 after draws (losing on penalties does not make a team sh*t!!) and gone out of the other 2 by a single goal. "Shit" teams would be losing 3 or 4-0. Losing by 1 goal or on penalties is not a shit performance.

In the SIX World Cups mentioned above, we have lost a grand total of FOUR matches. Not necessarily "unlucky" but hardly rubbish is it?

Good post, though I think we HAVE been unluckier than most (Spain can count themselves the unluckiest with VERY dodgy reffing in Euro 96 vs England and 2002 vs South Korea (much worse decisions against 'em than the childishly-ranting Italians I might add) to name but two of their misfortunes.
