Good old Sussex by the sea

The Simsters are tentatively thinking of moving back down to GOSBTS because the school situation in Merton is pissing us off.

We want to be by the sea and very close to Brighton (which is WELL expensive) and we like the look of SALTDEAN.

Anyone got any useful interesting facts or links on SALTDEAN please? It looks like it could fit the bill. Only a 4 mile cycle to Brighton (ideal for footy, commuting, shopping and stuff) and my son's local side would be Brighton & Hove Albion which can only be a good thing.

Shoreham-By-Sea is much better than Saltdean, 5miles outside brighton, huge Tesco's, 2x McDonalds plus countless other fast food places, a high street, right next to the A27, ideal location between Brighton/Worthing, a Port, Airport and the MOST important thing...plenty of PUBS...infact once upon a time Shoreham had the most number of pubs for any town in the UK, something like 50 but now its just above 20 I think!

oh and plenty of schools too!

Might I suggest Steyning. Good schools, friendly sort of place, picturesque, self-contained, cycle track to the sea, Downs on your doorstep. Not quite on the sea.

Downside is the distance from town. Great up to mid-teens, after that prepare to give lifts.

Rotters is the family seat so I know Saltdean, but from a good few years ago.

I live in Saltdean and can recommend it highly. Not only close to Brighton but has a nice little beach and a stroll along the undercliff gets you to Rottingdean which has plenty of pubs. There is a primary school in Saltdean plus plenty others in the neighbouring small towns. Longhill High School is in Rottingdean and is very good both academically and for sports.

Ah but being 300 metres or less from the sea is a pre-requisite for moving back to God's County to be honest. Along with Albion, that's what I miss the most and if you're not within easy walking distance you may as well be 5 or 10 miles away IMO.

Yeah but can you buy an enormous 4-5 bedroom detached house with an acre of garden, a double garage, conservatory and 200 yards from the sea in Shoreham for less than £500k?

I haven't lived in Saltdean, but I've been there a few times. The Art Deco lido / library looks nice, but I always get a Steppford Wives feeling when I'm there. It may well be a fantastic place to live, but it seems slightly soulless to me.

And jeez, Brighton is sooooo expensive these days. My house in Brighton (close to Preston Park Station) cost more than the (admittedly slightly smaller) house in London that I moved from a couple of years ago.

Actually the house I have in mind is actually in Rottingdean but this would buy you a 3 bed terrace in Wimbledon Park.


And this might buy you the same, but a slightly bigger garden & hallway and an extra box room.

Steyning is 6 miles from the sea. I'd prefer to live closer but life is full of compromises. I have lived within walking distance, and away from the sea. Walking is better, but it's not the only thing.

Simster - that Rottingdean one makes you almost neighbours with my parents ............. you need to know the Falmer Road is bloomin busy - and is to be avoided. Handy for Longhill though. If the postcode is correct it is also closer to a mile from the sea.

SALTDEAN - My Aunt, and one of my cousins, live there. There is a tunnel under the cliff to the beech. You get massive breakers on the beech when it is windy.

saltdean , miles out in the sticks, full of pensioners, nothing goes on there.

watch out for the aslyum seekers in the Ocean Hotel!!!

if you like boozing, dont move there severe lack of pubs ,the saltdean tavern is a charlie chalk pub.
