On that Douglas Bader picture it says '22.5 victories', which presumably means planes shot down. How can you have a half of a plane shot down? Surely either it's shot down, or it isn't. Half a plane is unlikely to be able to continue to fly.

You and someone else shoot down the same aircraft and you awarded half the kill.

If you ever watch the film Battle of Britain there is a scene where a novice RAF fighter Pilot is being debriefed after a dogfight & describing how he has shot down a Heinkel Bomber with white stripes on the wings. The Intelligence Officer congratulates him on getting a Wing Leader and then tells him he is the third person who shot it down so he gets 'one-third of a kill, laddie, one third'
