i reckon we're quite good at:

-inventing stuff
-acting
-singing and that
-producing experts in fairly obscure but popular fields

But there are so many!

Gladstone, Cromwell, Milton, Clare...

Or did you want someone living? Alan Moore; Tony Harrison (the greatest living Englishman, although he'd hate to be called that!); Boff; Coope, Boyes and Simpson; Roy Harper; and the list goes on.

On that Douglas Bader picture it says '22.5 victories', which presumably means planes shot down. How can you have a half of a plane shot down? Surely either it's shot down, or it isn't. Half a plane is unlikely to be able to continue to fly.

Pedantry aside, he's definitely a Great Briton.

You and someone else shoot down the same aircraft and you awarded half the kill.

If you ever watch the film Battle of Britain there is a scene where a novice RAF fighter Pilot is being debriefed after a dogfight & describing how he has shot down a Heinkel Bomber with white stripes on the wings. The Intelligence Officer congratulates him on getting a Wing Leader and then tells him he is the third person who shot it down so he gets 'one-third of a kill, laddie, one third':thumbsup:

Well, I hope they had some kind of Dogfight Panel to rule properly on this kind of thing, I imagine your top gun types wouldn't want to share out their hard work with some johnny-come-lately who pumped in a couple of rounds with the Messerschmitt already heading for the Channel.

of those currently still doing shit that makes me proud;
Jamie Oliver - a few more of him, annoying as he is, and the world's a better place for everyone, simple.
David Beckham, humility, grace and a strong desire to give back from someone who's one of the richest, most famous and high profile blokes on the planet - even if hios wife is an embarrassment.
Robert Smith - still going strong, never really compromised, just took the piss for a few years, my (English) music hero.
Dick Knight for saving the Albion (I know it wasn't just him but it wouldn't have happended without him now would it?).
Tony Bloom for kicking it up to the next step.
