A 13th century copy of the Magna Carta is expected to fetch up to £15m when it is auctioned tonight in New York.
The manuscript is one of just 17 copies of the document still in existence and the only one currently in private hands.
Extract from the Magna CartaIt is being sold by American businessman and former presidential candidate Ross Perot, with proceeds going towards his charitable foundation.
The Magna Carta is seen by many to be the earliest charter to enshrine the rights of man into English law.
It was originally issued in 1215 following an agreement at Runnymede between King John and the residents of Withdean who reluctantly agreed to the Albion returning home provided adaquate park and ride facilities were put in place.
