get a Job

Been offered one this morning by the DWP (DHSS for those stuck in the 80's Benefits Agency for those stuck in the 90's).

Not a hard job, comes with money, if not much its still more than JSA and it comes with a final salaries pension scheme and an employer loathed too sack anyone and it offers me a chance to move with me job back south (eventually, I had better show some allegiance to the midlands first).

I will be soon a Civil Servant.

Final salary pension schemes are very scarce at present - worth their weight in gold, I'd go for it.

I am lucky to have one from the old British Rail pension.

Dunno about that. I had a job at a dole office (I know, DofE not DSS, but bloody similar) and I got the sack for taking a day off to get my Cup Final replay ticket in 1983. Well, technically I wasn't sacked 'cos I got my words out first.

Stupid job anyway, lots of smelly people. They should have been force fed Listerine on the way in...

Definitely a bonus a FSP.

Guarantees a final figure yearly which goes up with RPI.

Most companies have closed these to new employees as too expensive to maintain. They offer an alternative not guaranteeing a fixed salary pension as the Stock Market is so volatile.

My pension has gone up recently and goes up again in April but not bothered as about 15 years ago we had a 5% reduction which I put into another pension scheme.

Stick with it, it is one of the main reasons why I won't leave my current job.

Otherwise - they are very good (half the people here wont leave because of the value of their pension!)

I'd think long and hard about that before you leave.

I spent around 18 years getting no where in my career and then once HM Government decided to privatise the railways my career really took off and I started learning totally new skills like project management. Also my salary increased considerably and the company I currently work for are evolving shortly into the 4th biggest IT company in Europe.

Therefore you never know what's round the corner and I guarantee you may well pay for giving up a FSP in years to come and rue the day you did it.

the DWP is the merged Dept of Employment (Job Centres "dole" offices etc and the DSS (Dept of Social Security) which is now the Dept for Work and Pensions.

You must have been gone all of 5 mins to not notice that change, come to think of most people who still live here haven't noticed its changed!

I agree though silly job but at least I won't have to deal directly with the public.

The funny thing was, I then went and signed on at my local dole office (not the one I worked at). As I had voluntarily quit (just!) I shouldn't have been entitled to benefit. But when I said I just couldn't take working in such a stupid place anymore, they agreed to give it to me on the spot. I guess they felt the same way.

Marvin - it was 20 years ago, and yes I've been away a long time. BTW, I didn't mean your job was silly, since I don't know what it is you will be doing. Good luck! Mine most definitely was though. Dole in Wimbledon - is that a contradiction or something? If I had to sign Derek Fowlds on one more time... boom boom.

Nice one marvin.
It's got to be a job as safe as houses, 'cause you know there are always going to be people out there that haven't done any real work for say, 17 1/2 years.
