I'm not sure about the title 'newsreader'. He was a lot more than that. An outstanding and respected journalist. One of the best.

Very sad news. A group of us met him briefly in Pakistan nearly 20 years ago and he was charming and personable with everyone. As said above Clive Myrie just kept it all under control at lunchtime and I was touched by the heartfelt tribute. RIP George - a wonderful journalist and fellow

I've just watched the tribute to him at the end of the 10 o'clock news with tears running down my face. A really great journalist, and from what his colleagues have said a true gentleman.
