Silly old bat
One of my favourite newsreaders. He had an interesting history himself from Christian Tamil in Ceylon (then Sri Lanka) to Ghana and to Britain.

Just heard a very upset Naga Munchetty announce it on Radio 5. Superb journalist and obviously a very big loss.

How very very sad, such a great presence on the news. Coincidentally the most well know newsreader in (flemish) Belgium Martine Tanghe died yesterday also aged 67 and also from cancer.

Clive Myrie's just about holding it together now on BBC1's News at One.

You can tell how much George was loved, admired and respected there.

He always showed tremendous empathy with his reports.

A sad loss indeed.

A true newsman, very straight and truthful. He had a very calming presence, whatever he was reporting on. He seemed a very honest and trustworthy man - I'm sure he's a huge loss to his family and friends and to broadcasting.
