Genuine question and advice on sunbeds

Im probably going to get slaughtered for this but having not had a holiday this year and being the ultimate metrosexual that i am i visited the sunbeds on base today for the first time.

However it has got me thinking of the health risks and whether i should continue with this practice.

Im an individual with a few freckles and a few moles. Probably more moles than your average individual but not in any way shape or form an excessive ammount. Two or three of these moles are raised as appose to flat.

Should i be using sunbeds? Are they ok in moderation? How much greater is the risk of skin cancer when they are used?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

everything in moderation (including moderation, but thats not for here) is good or ok. i think sunbeds are inherently safer than sun as only the lighter/safer UV rays are emitted.

Makers of sunbeds will keep trying to tell you that their type of sunbed is safe. But they aren't. Sunbeds haven't been around for long enough for us to prove beyond all doubt that they cause as much malignant melanoma as lying in the sun. But laboratory research has proved that the type of ultraviolet light used in sunbeds (UVA) can cause all types of skin cancer. Some studies are showing that using sunbeds definitely increases the risk of melanoma. In 2007, an analysis of 23 studies reported that people have an increase in risk if they have ever used a sunbed. And the risk was highest for people who had used a sunbed before the age of 35. A study published in 2009 found that people who have regularly used a sunbed before the age of 30 have a 75% increase in their risk of developing melanoma.

The ultraviolet light in the sun is made up of two different wavelengths of light. These are called ultraviolet A and B (UVA and UVB). In the mid 1980s, sunbeds that only gave off UVA were developed. We know that it is the UVB in the sun that causes burning. So the manufacturers said that UVA alone must be safe because it didn't burn you. This isn't true.

Using a sunbed to get a tan before you go on holiday can also increase the risk of melanoma. There is no such thing as a safe tan.

But going in one is going to be extra to the sun you would be getting anyway, unless you only go out at night or something.

I've been a sun worshipper most of my life. Last year I had a non-lifethreatening skin cancer removed from my leg. It has left a scar which is no big deal but I would not have wanted it on my face.

My parents lived in Jamaica for several years and in later life my dad had several areas of skin cancer attributed to this.

If you go to a good sunbed place they should be able to advise you on how often and for how long you should be having sunbeds depending on your skin type... x

You'd be a twat. If you do feel the need try some fake tan. Might not be as good but it's better than skin cancer.

Is it worth looking nice and tanned when in a few years you could regret it ?

use this one.. its good but lads if your gonna use fake tan... make sure u exfoliate 12 hours before and moisterise areas like elbows.. knees.. and where there is more hair etc... or youll end up with orange eyebrows! haha!

Johnson’s Holiday Skin Body Lotion Medium to Dark Skin 400ml - Boots

Its a gradual tanner so it builds up if you apply it daily! so then you dont wake up and think oh crap what have i done! x

Thanks for the advice but i draw the line at fake tan cream

so you stay in there for a much shorter period. as said, no tanning is completely safe, but on balance using a sunbed must be safer than gaining the same tan in direct sunlight.

that piece from the cancer research misses an important number to allow anyone to make an informed decision: what is the normal liklyhood of getting a skin melanoma. if its say 1 in 5, increasing that 75% makes it a little of 1 in 3. but if the chance of a 30 yr having melanoma is 1 in 5000 it goes to about 1 in 2800. rather different perspective isnt it?

(i dont tan nor work for sunbed industry.)

Sunbeds are evil even in small quantities, besides basting yourself like a chicken, you're simply frying your skin. How that can ever be good even in small quantities amazes me, people who are exceptionally vain are able to override common sense!

Same for self tanning lotion, nasty nasty stuff! Read the ingredients and then tell me if you want to eat it!
