I'm living on my own in a 1-bed flat, electricity-only tariff with the Utility Warehouse Clubhouse membership dealy. I'm on around 50 quid pcm, plus roughly the same for water bills. That's approx. £100 for utilities each month.

from my experience both Scottish power and british gas vastly over estimate re monthly payments
far prefer to pay every quarter so know what have used and pay for it when have used it
all suppliers discriminate against paying this way though
current supplier e-on are relentless in trying to get me to switch to monthly payments re only the best deals if you pay monthly etc etc etc

My advice which I do is manage online, if I get an estimated bill which annoys me, I input a read and replace it?

I also manage my DD online, if I'm in credit I reduce it! The standing charges annoy me, but then again so does my BT land-line...what can you do?

I know there are savings to be made by going on DD, but I prefer to do a meter reading each month and pay for what I use. Then the energy companies aren't sitting on any of my money.

Pay from £50 a month for gas and electricity up to about £120 a month for both in the thick of winter, for a 2/3 bed house with four people in it, often during the day.

Changing to LED lightbulbs instead of halogens cut the electricity bill in half.

I'm in a one bed flat with a pikey meter. Spend about £60 each month on the electric, and a further £20 for the gas, which I only use to heat water for washing up really. The shower is electric and I never have the heating on. Bit of a pisstake to be honest

I pay less than that for my 3 bed semi with 2 people, and that includes having heating on through winter. Seems steep to me. I'm with First Utility.

This. I'm with OVO since May. Dual energy bills have averaged £40 per month but will probably double once the central heating gets turned on.
