I was trawling through some old videos the other day when I came across a news item which featured an Albion game against Leeds at the Goldstone when the match was officially sponsored by a tobacco company. It was the 80's. The Albion were giving way free tabs for anyone who bothered to turn up! A spokesman fo the club said it was fine as they weren't handing them out to under 16's. Oh how times have changed. Mind you, the way we've been playing The Albion might want to consider being sponsored by a drug company.

I was going reguarly at this time but I don't remember this, does anyone else?

Adrian Mutu smokes, as do several foreign players.

I read that German bloke's book (goalkeeper who used to play for Barnsley during their brief spell in the Premiership) and he said that when he first turned up, the Barnsley team went on one of their regular Saturday nights out.

The English players were sinking pint after pint, and getting totally mullered in one of Barnsley's finest nightspots (er...), leering over all the local girls, shouting, stripping off, and generally making total twats of themselves, to the point when a few of them were so drunk they chucked up in the club.

At which point the German guy, an occasional smoker who'd only had a couple of drinks, lit up a cigarette. Whereby all the Barnsley players stared at him as if he was mad, and asked him if he had any idea what he was doing to his health.

Marvellous.

What are they waiting for now then?! They moan that they can't fill Withdean. Give away 20 Bensons with every ticket and you'll be turning them away, no worries.

I got given a free packet of fags away at Huddersfield a couple of seasons ago and it made my DAY.

Another story from that book details how Barnsley went on a pre season tour of the west country, and all the players went to the pub one afternoon for a bit of team bonding.

They were sat out in the pub garden, the whole squad and Danny Wilson, then the manager. Leese (just remembered the German guy's name!) couldn't work out how the players could sink so many pints without ever having to get up and go to the toilet, as he himself was needing to go very frequently.

They drank more and more, until he realised their secret. Looking under the table for something he'd dropped, Leese noticed that they all had their shorts on, and rather than get up and go to the toilets like most people, the Barnsley players were simply pulling their shorts to one side and pissing on the floor underneath the table where they were sat. In the middle of a busy pub garden.

English footballers are so classy.....
