England have been hit by a major blow with the news that captain Andrew Flintoff will undergo surgery on his left ankle early next week and is expected to be out for up to three months.
The Lancashire all-rounder complained of soreness in his ankle on Friday, three days into his comeback County Championship game against Kent.
He saw a specialist on Saturday morning, who confirmed that the 28-year-old needs an operation.
Flintoff had been expected to lead England on his home ground of Old Trafford in the second Test against Pakistan, which starts on Thursday, but has now played his last game of cricket of the summer.
He will miss the current Test series against Pakistan and the one-day series which follows and will now be regarded as a major doubt for October's Champions Trophy tournament in India.
Flintoff suffered discomfort in his ankle during the final Test defeat to Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge at the start of June and was told to rest the injury. He returned in Twenty/20 action for Lancashire last week and was attempting to prove his fitness for Old Trafford at Canterbury.
But he complained of discomfort on the final day of the First Division match and was immediately booked in to see a specialist, who has confirmed England's worst fears.
Flintoff's next target will be the tour of Australia, starting in November, when England will be defending the Ashes that their talisman played such a major part in winning last summer.
Middlesex batsman Andrew Strauss - who captained the side in the absence of Flintoff and Michael Vaughan during the NatWest Series and last week's first Test at Lord's - is expected to be named as captain for the rest of the summer when the team for Old Trafford is announced on Sunday.
