England 391-9 declared, from 85.2 overs, RR 4.58.

What a great move by Captain Cook... a couple of overs before lunch at the openers... both on a PAIR.

Lead of 331 on first innings - and it is still before lunch on DAY TWO

This game, series and rivalry just keeps on delivering :clap2:

Excellent declaration.

Those two were struggling to put bat on ball. We might have scored ten more so the chance of a couple of overs before lunch is worth trading those runs.

Ali has been in such good form for this series. His ability to score so freely at the bottom end of an innings has turned the balance of the two games we won before this one.

He is a really good batsman and I actually think he is one of our best. Concerning opening I think we should give Lyth the last test and I wouldn't have Ali opening against South Africa....I would choose a specialist opener, but if no one can cement the opening position (eg Lyth, Carberry, Compton etc) by next summer, I think Ali should be given a go. I know he has worked on his dealing with the short ball and it is different at 8 than 1 but, if he could nail down an opening spot that would so free us up to pick a horses for courses player at 8.

Come on Australia... show us what you have got... not another pathetic capitulation, surely? That would be a bit sad IMHO.

Shame for all the people with tickets tomorrow if they don't put up a decent fight. The ECB are going to be right shafted with the tickets lost over these two matches.

Can't get my head round the bit that shows on the telly as "Aus trail by 318" That normally means something like Aus need 319 to win, but they don't, they need 319 to even make us bat again :lolol:

Lunch, on Day Two (yes, Day Two!)

Australia 14-0 (3 overs)

Effectively -317 for no wicket ???

In that last over before lunch, Warner played and missed at FOUR deliveries from Stuart Broad... jammy git

No it wouldn't, you'd never get that sort of attitude from the aussies were we in that position, its a losing mentality to think like that.

Inflicting an innings defeat would be superb.

Come on England.

I take joy in the contest... the cut and thrust... the individual moments of triumph and disaster. Repeated capitulation is disappointing.

That's not true. After we collapsed pathetically in 2006/7, plenty of Aussies were a little melancholy that a side that had fronted up so well in 2005 against undoubtedly the best side in World cricket (and one of the greatest ever seen) could be so meek in giving up the Ashes 18 months later.
